Hi,

I just bought a Savage No.4 Mk.1/3. I am new to Enfields and I am having a hell of a time properly getting the bolt in. I thought I had it at one point, but whenever I closed the bolt, it would turn on its own and pop back open. Any help is appreciated

Hi Cote_b,

Are you sure the bolt head is correctly "in" - that is, its side groove is guided corectly by the receiver, rather than having the bolt head's right side just sitting on the guide? Not sure I'm explaining this clearly,

Lou

if it's a no4 mk1 then there is a push down button at the rear of the receiver.
slide bolt in to it's rear-most position and push down hard on the "plunger" while you push bolt-head down and forward.the bolt head slides in that slot in the receiver.

if it's a no4mk1* then there is a cutout in that slot in the receiver.slide bolt in 3/4 of the way forward and push bolt down into the slot while pushing bolt forward.

hope this helps...

It must be a No.4 Mk.1*, because there is a slot in the reciver 3/4 of the way up. I slid the piece from the bolt into the slot and can move the bolt forward and backwards fine. The only issue is that I can't seem to turn the bolt down all the way and because of that, the bolt pops open when I let go of it.

It sounds like your bolt head might not be screwed in all the way into the bolt. screw it down tight and then turn it enough to line up with the receiver.
If this does not fix it, your head spacing might be too tight. The thing about the No.4 Enfield is that there are I think 6 different bolt heads, each one a different size. they are numbered, 0 being the tightest. A lot of people don't know this and will simply swap out a damaged bolt head for the first one they find.

your bolt head is not screwed in all the way.it is 1 turn back.remove the bolt by placing the bolt head over that cutout in that slot and lifting up.then slide the bolt back and out(if the rear sight is a flip-up type with the elevation adjustments then the sight has to be flipped-up with to the big sight)
screw the bolt head in all the way till it aligns with the main bolt body.then slide bolt into receiver and push down when you get to the cutout and slide forward.the bolt should now close.
if it dosen't close after all this then look for a number stamped on the bolt head (0 1 2 3 ).you might need a smaller bolt head(too little head-space)
0 is smallest bolt head,3 is largest.which 1 do you have???

Thanks to all who helped out. It turns out the bolt head was not screwed in all the way. It works perfectly now. Ill get some pics of it up soon in the Enfield thread in the photo section.
