it's getting close - well, okay, it's not too close, but we've been busy getting ready!
Can't wait to get training....
Ft. Mac is June 9th, Drayton is in Aug, (not sure of the date yet)
and the Grand Daddy , Ponoka ( 40 years old!), is Labour day weekend.
There are moving targets, gongs, timed fire targets, pop ups, etc.
Here's some pics of some of the trophy buckles
Lefty #### owns the first annual Povincial Champion buckle, BTW.

Tenderfoot Asks Key Question Eh!

What IS the rifle rodeo?? Inquiring minds wanna know? I want to get ready eh!! Let me know what the course of fire is or "what the rifle rodeo" IS?

Please post more information on the rifle rodeo, such as dates and rules, I would like to try doing some competitive shooting, but don't know where or how to start.

Well, the course of fire varies in rifle rodeos, depending on the particular club putting on the shhoot.
Ours goes from 50 to 500 meters with different firearms in four different classes and two groups, junior and senior.
Classes are .303 British where any rifle chambered for the brit using irons can be used. two point slings, from different positions.

Optics class ( scopes) is any big game cartridge chambered in a rifle with a scope, two point slings allowed, different positions.

Irons was originally intended for open sights but has evolved inot a full blown TR match!
match sights, single point slings, only stipulation is a big game caliber.

Unlimited is just that, any caliber rifle , Fclasss, bipod, whatever.shot prone
Our targets are gongs, claybirds, empty shotgun shells , etc.
This year we intend to have at least on moving target, a deer at 50 yards.
Our course is 20 rounds per class, one go around

Drayton has turning targets, a running deer at about 125 a bear at 100(?), an elk at about 150and a 385(approx.) coyote.
Different positions, with handicap for irons, muzzle loader, etc..
IIRC the course of fire takes about 20 rounds and is out of 100.
Ponoka has a running fox at 70, as well as flip up targets like a goat at 350, a
rabbit at 155, etc.
All there targets are time fired at random with the targets exposed for 5 seconds., with five rounds completing a go around out of a possible 50 points. irons and scope classes , buddy class, family, etc.

The aggregate score is derived from the first irons and scope go around from Ponoka, the irons and scope go around from Ft, mac, and the complete score from Drayton Valley.

I will be psoting the individual events stuff here, as they come up.

basicly, if you have a decent hunting rifle, and a good irons rifle ( no need for a full blown TR rifle for the irons) you can be right there for the agg.
Incidently, the most expensive rifles do not always win!
Last year's irons score at ponoka was higher than most of the scoped scores, and ther have been only 4 ( I think) "possibles" in 39 years there, so it is no cake walk.
Ponoka is located on Highwy 2 between Red deer and Edmonton.
Drayton Valley is about 120K southwest of Edmonton, and Ft. Mcmurray is North on Hiway 63!

Cool, I better start practicing. One last question, how much does it cost to compete? Do I have to join some sort of club? Thanks for all the info, you have been very helpful.

You DO NOT have to be a member of the Alberta Fish and Game Association to enter.
Ponoka is $5 per go around
The whole things starts with a miss and out balloon shoot at 200 yards, then 300 yards .
Lottsa wind there, things are fun!

The shoot lasts all weekend there, and most people do about 3 go arounds in
each category, which are
Seniors scopes, irons, buddy shoot (two seniors at once) or family( one senior, one family member a junior)
ladies irons and scopes.
Junior irons and scopes.

There is also a "sub junior" .22 shoot.
Buckles are awarded for each event , trophies for second and third place.
Merchandise prizes as well.
The top senior gets his name on a plarte with is attached to a commoratib=ve Winchester lever action.

There are usually about 400 enteries which works out to about 100 people.

Drayton Valley cost is $15 ( I think) with one go around lasting the whole day.
They do not have seperate categories.
Cash money prizes are given for each event IIRC.

Ft. McMurray has a senior and junior class, and a "sub junior" .22 event .
Buckles are given out for winners in each evveentt with second and third place trophies.
There is also at grand Aggregate Top Gun buckle , and a junior top gun buckle, as well the winners get their names on the annnual trophies.

Thgere are door prizes at Ft. Mcmurrayy, such as a weekend for 4 at Clearwater River Lodge, tools, etc.

I don't know how to link pics so I just bumped the thread in the photo gallery.
There are a few pics from several years ago, but you can see the differences in the different formats.

Sandytye, Spruce Grove may very well be resurecting their rifle rodeo this year!
You should maybe contact the executive to see if you can maybe help and make the shoot!:)
