Getting paint off a scope

I picked up a MK4 10 power but it was painted. Any suggestions on how to remove the paint safely without damaging the scope and seals?

sem bumper stripper would be my first choice , just don't let it sit too long as it might lift the original finish

Steel wool may work but if you want to retain the original finish it may be very hard to retain.

I'd be tempted to spray a little WD 40 on it and see what happens?
It shouldn't hurt the original finish.

I would also suggest stuffing cotton balls into the lens openings and using tape or somthing to protect from whatever solvent you use. the article is in the DIY section on snipershide. Good luck!
