I have some friends that are driving through Hawkesbury, and there seems to be a store there I will not name that sells powder...Is it legal for me to call them, prep an order and have a non-PAL holder pick it up as he swings by?

Second, I heard this store sells "surplus" powder. If I say I want a couple pounds of IMR4064, how is it different from the stuff I can (very rarely) get locally????

lastly, I don't go through powder very quickly...I seem hell-bent on using a pound or less per year; how long is it good for in the original container at 23C 50% humidity?

it comes in plastic bags, in cardboard boxes, instead of factory containers

if you keep it dry and room temp, should last a long time

and yes, no PAL needed for powder

Last time I was there, and I think they've moved since, they operated out of a house.
Inside, it was warehouse like, stuff stacked everywhere.
They gave me the powder in Containers, not bags like you get when you use mail order. (marked ammomart, the old company name)
Great people, well stocked store. Low overhead.
Powder order was filled from bins while I watched.

Absolutely you can drop by and pick up your supplies. Andrew is always willing to let you visit and have a nice chat. Give him a phone call a few days before though with your order unless you only pick up a couple of items. The last time I was there, he's still at the same place Ammomart was at the east side of town. Get the directions off Andrew when you phone him :)

The powders he sells are the regular Hodgdon and IMR powders that he buys in bulk and re-packages himself to give us reloaders a bit of a break price wise. In addition, he also has a few surplus powders that have no direct Hodgdon or IMR equivalent. I'm using a lot of WC735 surplus powder which works great in my AR15 and is very similar to H335. If you pick up the powder at Higginson's, you also save the Hazmat fee that Andrew has to charge if he ships via courier :D

Last time I was there (2005), they just relocated in a new building about 5 minutes driving south of the highway. You can email your order in or call him directly. No problem for pick up.

No problem for pickup but if you want more than 1 pound containers you have to let him know in advance. He is not allowed to store large quantities of powder at the store.

I'd try to keep it a little cooler and dryer; but my Dad is still using powder he bought in the 1960's.

...the powders I have purchased from him (Higginson) in the past came in heavy weight plastic bags that were placed in cardboard boxes. I found it easier to "decant" these to dark gallon sized plastic jugs.

All of the powders I have purchased in the past (including from Ammomart) seem to have a very good shelf life....eg some I had over 25 years and appear/perform ok. Some like the "RP5" he sold many years ago are wonderful powders for certain applications eg 270W.

However I did purchase some "3031 equivalent" IMR from them a number of years ago and it deteriorated very rapidly .. couple or 3 years in same storage conditions other powders had lasted well. Bad smell ... red dust etc so I destroyed it. I think in some cases when dealing with surplus powders you can't always be sure how well the "previous owner" stored them..Higginson are pretty careful though with their storage conditions I believe.
