Well, maybe not getting wood but wood is the topic of the question. I see two recent No.1 Mk III* in EE right now and both are missing the "tangs" or the wooden legs that cover the side of the site. Is that original? I want and ORIGINAL No.1 MkIII or III* in the future so would I be wrong to consider either of those rifles?

Originally all of them had wood in the spot you are asking about. It has either broken off over time or been removed by bubba. If you get either rifle you would need to get replacement top wood, both front and rear, which is doable. It's the forestock that is really hard to find unmolested.

Should look like this:

Enfield wood

India had a habit of cutting the "legs" of handguards for some reason. Same for the "Ishy screw". Guess they thought they could improve on the British pattern....poor buggers!

They removed them because they broke off easily, so rather then repair them they just did away with the legs.

not really required and just make the rifle look more finished.
