I recently got a Gew 88/05 which turns out to be far more accurate than I hoped. I does shoot way high; is there a source for a higher front sight? I know they are availible for 98 Mausers does the 88 have the same dovetail?

88s sight in at 400m so you have to aim below your mark at closer distances. The old saying "Aim for the belt buckle, hit the torso" comes to mind with these and other rifles of the period. Ive had wonderful success with these ladies and Gew 98s from 50 to 200 yards. I will admit that when i aim slightly below my mark, it is a bit of a guess as to where you will hit exactly. My first attempts at precision shooting was at an orange at 100 yards. It took a bit of time but i learned where some of my 88 and 98s shoot.

I will also say that i hand load my shots and closely follow the spitzer round used during ww1 as this is what the sights were calibrated for. I found some variances in commercial ammo so i rarely buy it now.

Im not sure if the sight from a gew 98 would fit.

I would also love to see pictures of your gew 88, maybe you have a sister rifle to one of my own?

For starters, the load the rifle is calibrated for (assuming an 88/05) is a 154gn flat based spitzer going 800m/s at the muzzle. It is also calibrated, depending on model, for either a 300m or 400m zero, so they typically all shoot high at 100M.

If you need a taller front sight, you may have to modify a sight blade from another firearm or see a gunsmith.

Beautiful danzig from an uncommon production year. It looks like a bit of wood is missing from the right side fore end? Has she been to Turkey?
