I just picked up a Gew 98 made by Spandau in 1905 and being a Lee Enfield guy I am trying to learn more about these Mausers. It came without a cleaning rod or top wood so I placed a back-up k98 one on it. My main concern with it is the stock although a early stock it looks like it would have been on a rifle with different top wood and sight (see picture). It also had a with a six pointed star and a B in it. Can any of you Gew98 experts tell me more?

Your stock has been to Brazil; that 6-pointed star indicates Brazil police/defense district B.

Likely the stock would have come from a Brazilian Model of 1909 rifle which was simply a commercially-made Gew 98 in 7x57: very close indeed to the German rifle and all mechanical parts interchanging despite the different rear sight. Your rifle has the correct "Lange" sight for that period.

One thing about a 1905 rifle is that you have no worries regarding a tight bore: the changeover in the ammo took place in 1904 and everything made after that date can handle the JS loading: 154-grain pointed flatbase bullet at 2880 ft/sec, which is hotter than a .30-06.

VERY nice rifle.

I imagine that Nabs will be on here shortly to drool a bit and add to this.

I'm heading off now to wipe my mouth.

Great find.

Brazilian M1908 stock on a German Gewehr 1898 rifle, that is why the handguard inletting is wrong.

Well it looks like I will have to find a WWI or earlier stock the one without the finger groove, please let me know where I can find the part needed to bring it back to its full glory. To give a little more on the rifle all the numbers on the body match but it has a unnumbered bolt, it was also counter bored sometime in its service life. I have been looking for a WW1 German used rifle and I think this fits the bill.

Original Gewehr 98 stocks are very hard to come by, I had to dip into the U.S. to get one.

They will also command a premium if they are unit marked and not refinished.

The pre-war Gewehr 98s are very well made. I happen to have your sister rifle from 1907 and she is very accurate out to 300m.

Has anyone got a picture of the early stock. I might have one including the bands. What a fair price for one ? Ron

Here is a reference thread. The early stock that that 1905 originally would have had would have been a walnut stock with a unit disc and no finger grasping grooves.

I have been meaning to re-do the pictures and information on that thread so it will happen when I get back home.
