Has anyone been fortunate enough to try the GG&G heavy duty swivel 1219 bipod? I would be interested in hearing your experience. They are tough to find....

Regards,

joe

I ordered one through a guy here on CGN about a year ago but he ordered the non-swivel model. He ended up keeping it for himself and never ordered me the swivel model:mad: . I would still like one though.

GG&G tells me they are out of stock and supplying the US Military. Back order appears to be a lengthy wait. I'll get a few on order.

Dave's Surplus had some in stock last week. Didn't bother checking when I was through there today if they still had them. I'm personally not a big fan of most GG&G stuff so I didn't pay all that much attention to them.

Gg@g Bipod

Hello Joe,
I have had several(7) of the GG@G bi pods over the last three years,(I have two left on display guns) swivel and regular fixed version . - from a aesthetics point of view they look racy, HOWEVER would I mount one on a Hard use gun and have confidence in it to take prolonged active use NOPE.... I would not even put it on my Fclass gun- simply because the adjustments are a friction nut and gravity(turn nut and hope it keeps leg from sliding ) affair that might-WILL-slip when you least expect it not to mention that the thinness of the internal leg almost predicts breakage .For light duty use OK but when you consider the price of one of these bad boys landed there are readily available alternatives that are much more substantial .

Hi Ed.

Can you tell us if you have the model 1219. Apparently that is their top dog model. In my discussions with them, they mentioned dropping the 7000 series aluminum and going to the 6000 series ...... which was a small flag to me.

What brands would you recommend?

Thanks for the reply!

Joe

Hello Joe ,

I have had at least one of each of the bi pod models GG@G offers and my assessment of there product remains the same, looks high speed"Hollywood ###y " if you will - but will it survive hard use?. I didn't want to get into a situation where I had to warranty the bi pod for a customer because it came apart on a sheep hunt or worse it broke at "work " and it let somebody down at a critical moment .At present I think the two bi pods that always seem to get the job done are the Harris series and the Parker hale (REAL STEEL PARKER HALE NOT... VERSAPOD as I have seen several of the VERSPODS go to scrap on several occasions. Yes I know that the aluminum Versapod was issued with the MK12MOD 0 (weight issue I guess ) but you definitely don't see it issued on the MK12MOD 1= Harris with A.R.M.S bi pod adapter or KAC Harris bi pod adapter )I Think the majority of serious "working " guns use Harris or Parker hale almost exclusively .

Hi Ed.

Thanks. I was interested in the 1219 specifically since it is their "heavy duty" swivel model. If you get a chance to check your models, please do.

I haven't seen the parkerhale model. Does it maintain tighter tolerances then the lower priced clone - versa pod? The next option appears to be the SAKO bipod.

I know these bipods have a bigger impact to the budget, but I believe they are also intended for heavy rifles +14lbs (~ ave 18lbs). The Harris is starting to strain when you get into the 13+ range.

Hello Joe ,

GG@G heavy swivel I had two of them(sold them) ... as for Sako bi pod I have four of them mounted on Sako trg 22@42(I own 5) - one rifle doesn't have a bi pod- , they are great for a sako system as the sako stock has been specially inletted to accept the male end of the bi pod also at close to $600 retail + tax depending on FX I still think you are better served with a Parker hale = $295-$375.00 depending where you get one or a Harris at approx $160-$180.00 again depending on where you buy it and the model . As far as the Harris not being able to take more the 13 lbs -I disagree I have had several rifles pushing just under 22 lbs (FCLASS UNLIMMITED) that were supported buy Harris swivel bi pods and the bipod worked great if you build a rifle that has peculiar or particular point of balance you may get the gun tipping over sideways but Have never seen one stressed buy weight

Thanks Ed.

That is disappointing to hear that GG&G isn't a viable option. We will have to look at the Parker Hale I guess. How is it for play and rotation adjustability?

I've used the Harris swivels for some time now. The 13.5 lb rifle in hunting applications just works but without any severe duty.

Having used the Harris on my 17.5LB Geske 338 Lapua (field hunting) I was worried it would pack it in. At times it was ready to collapse and I am confident it would have if I was rougher with it. Did it do the job, well yes, but not without concern. I agree that for range use it would last longer.

Thanks again for sharing your experience.

Regards,

Joe

the only thing I don't like about the Sako bipod (price notwithstanding) is the inability to lock or tighten the swivel. beyond that I think it's a great bipod.

Can you post a couple of pictures of the Sako bipod? Do you think the swivel feature could be modified so it is adjustable? That is without too much work...

I picked up an AI/Parker Hale Bipod and am very happy with it.

It is all steel & solid!! it Swivels and has slots in the legs to lock the height adjustment. It removes quickly and the legs fold in either direction.

It is built to survive a Nuke attack!!!!;)

The downside is weight. It is heavy.

Ed, does the PH have adjustability for ease of swivel and how does clearance or play compare to the Versa-pod bipods?

I'll try and get some pics up on my day off. I think it could be modified to allow for tightening of the swivel, probably just a spacer of some sort. Rooster33 and I are thinking of making copies, with some changes to allow for mounting on other guns.

Joe, there no swivel adjustment on the AI version.I have only taken a brief look at the Versa-Pods, so I can't really compare the two.

But fit and finish on the AI/PH bipod is excellent.

I have a PH bi-pod that I have had for several years. I have also owned a Versa Pod, they are very similar, only the Versa does not even come close as far as quality goes. I have shot a rifle with the GG&G bi-pod, as is typical with GG&G, the quality was fantastic, the Vesra is a decent product for the price, but nothing compares to a PH, not even close.

Hi Steve

Where did you buy your PH brand?

I have no clue where to get them.....

Regards,

Joe

Joe the actual "Parker Hale" bi-pod is no longer made as they are no longer in business, but Accuracy International has had the design for sometime and has been having them produced for the AI line of rifles. They are the same bi-pod and just as expensive. I bought mine on e-bay over 7 years ago. Try e-bay.

Now heres a bipod that beats any I've seen... and fully adjustable!
