Ghost Ring Sights, Where or How to Aim?

I got a Mossberg 590 with ghost ring sights, I never really shot slugs out of it to see how it grouped. Sunday I did a match and I was quite low, Today I zeroed it and once again it was low.

I took the front post and line it up that the tip of the front post is in the center of the Target and fired ( 50M ). but I was shooting low, so I cranked up the rear sight and about the same. I had to aim on the top of the 20M bullseye target for the slug to drop into center... so about a 4" drop.


My question is how do you line up the sights?

Do you put the bottom of the front post with the bottom of the rear sight base?

Top of the front sight post should be dead center of the rear peep. It should naturally center itself.

Well SORRY, I never had a shotgun with Ghost Ring sights before, so instead of wasting ammo all the time and wondering why I'm not hitting where I want to, I thought I'll ask...

If you did not have anything to say why bothering even posting. I take it your some sort of GOD when it comes to guns...

I did that but, It was shooting low each time and I ran out of Elevation...

I think that you'll find that they are for a 50yd zero.

As long as the front sight is visible in the aperture, it doesn't matter where it appears in the aperture; put the front site on the target and if the rifle or shotgun is sighted correctly it will hit at the top of the front site. To prove this site on a target from a rested position. With the front sight on the target, you can move your head around and as long as the front site is visible inside the aperture, it does not move on the target.

Aim it just like a C7/C8 ... centre the post in the 'ring' and POI should be top of the front post.

I find my slug shooters hit comparatively low at 50 meters also.

I often wonder if its that police street engagements are generally very close....and in reality we shoot smoothbore slug guns, which are 'on' for 25 meters?

Before I took my Ithaca shotgun wild boar hunting, I fired it alot to get the grist of 50, 75 & 100 yard drop. I was surprized at the amount of drop.....
Oh well, I still was very happy with results.

What do you think guys?

I take it that you are at the end of the adjustment range for the rear sight? After that, its a lower front sight, if its replaceable.

You think maybe the front sight is a bit high then?

Most shotgun matches I've done max we really shoot it is 60-70 M, Last match was only at 48M

The Moss 590 I bought has a Mavrick 88 barrel on it that the 590 GR sights were installed onto. So maybe when it was installed it was put on a wee bit higher.

Think I should file down the front sight a bit?

What kind of ammo are you using? Before you start filing down your front sight, have you consistently had the problem regardless of ammo?

What Winz said is good info......you would be surprized the point of impact difference between different rounds.

I found brenneke rotweill hitting lower, than winchester fosters, at 60 & 100 yards.

If you can do so, get some reloading gear & data for shotguns (cheap compared to rifle/pistol)
& load up some lyman cast slugs too.

If you are out of elevation and still hitting low it is definitely because of your barrel set up. When I had a 590A1 with ghost rings, I could hit within 10" consistently off hand at 100m. You should still be able to make adjustments up even if you are zeroed at 100m.

Is there any possibility of a bent barrel Rob?
On a similar note I have one very worn older M&P M37 Ithaca, and it too shoots slugs low. It does have a bead sight on a ramp only though.

And I have other DSPS Ithacas, that put there slugs much higher on the target board.

I have no personal experience with, 500 or 590 style Mossbergs myself.

While shooting Winchester foster 2 3/4 inch slugs, I found they printed higher (& accurate)than Federal Classic & Rotweill slugs.
I read somewhere once that Winchester slugs have a skirt, that fits most shotgun better, than most other plain lead designs.
I am at a loss for any other advice......sorry!
