Giraud vs Dillon rt1500

Keeping an eye on this. I'm interested in loading 223 aswell. Trimming is a huge concern of mine. If there is an easy fast efficient way to trim on a budget, I'm in!! Where can you get the dillon trimmer, what's the price?

Nevermind just seen B.S.S has the dillon.

$483 for the dillon power trimmer
$83 for the trim/die dillon

Jaw just about hit the floor. Doesn't look like there's anyway to do this on a budget. That's alot of .223 before you recoup costs for dies, kits, measures, trimmers ect..not to mention the time trimming, damn this decision isn't easy. Looks like around 10K rounds of .223 before cost is recouped.

Take a look at the Giraud tri-way if your budget is really tight... I've seen people coupled it with a electric motro (1/8 or 1/4 hp) and it works just fine. I have USD in my bank account and I go down south for work sometimes, and I'm kind of the guy that only wants to spend once and be happy about it.
What press are you running? If I'm on a single stage, Giraud power trimmer or tri-way would be a no-brainer for me.

I'm running a dillon 550b progressive. I only want to spend once. I'm on the edge right now, either I buy a 1000 pack and never reload or pick up the reload supplies and reload forever.

I reload alot of different pistol cartridges, none are necked so no trimming. I don't shoot lots of 223 right now, but may in the future, no idea. My guess is I'll average 1-10K per year for the rest of my life. I still want to find out if canada ammo is going to supply 300/1000 or what? That makes reloading not worth while.

Hardest cartridge so far to decide whether to load or not.

A side note is, I reload for both enjoyment and to save money. I don't know if I'd mind doing all the extra trimming tumbling work. I do enjoy my time with the dillon it's my relax meditation when not shooting. However if none of this saved money in long term don't think I'd do it.

I hear you. Loading 223 isn't going to save me a lot. But if bulk 223 price is fluctuating around $470-500/1000. I'm still able to load the same quantity for about half of the price. I load for both enjoyment and saving as well. But I ask myself when I'm wanting to buy some fancy reloading equipment with a steep price that is the money spent on said stuff going to make my reloading time more enjoyable and make me want to sit there longer? I certainly don't need the machine that costs 10-20K but I certainly would not want to spend the minimal and have to do everything manually. In my case, Dillon and Giraud are worth the money. A little overpriced? Maybe, but we do pay premium for nice things.
For us who load on progressive, it may make more sense of going with the Dillon trimmer and call it a day. However, I rarely spend more than 1 hour cranking the handle. So for me, either Giraud or Dillon would be perfect for me. I'm actually leaning to Giraud since it doesn't get too hot and isn't so loud as that what I've heard. I think I probably have to let my impulse to help me decide this time.

Another way to trim,(way cheaper) but more labor intensive is to use 2 drill presses & set one up for trimming with a Lee Case Length Gauge (trim a bit short so the next time you resize you don't have to trim) & the other one for chamfering. Or you can do both processes on 1 drill press.(takes longer) (a corded or cordless drill will also work) I used to do the drill press thing when I was doing my own personal brass before I started Budget Shooter Supply.

Another way is to buy a Lyman Case Prep Xpress & drill & tap a Lee Case Length Gauge to thread onto one of the posts to trim the brass. It comes with an inside & outside deburring tip already. (I like the Lyman the best)

Regards, Henry

I just did processed about 8,000 223 brass the other day using a RT-1200 on a 1050. Like Henry I have a M-die after the trim die which takes off the inside burr. I also put a m-die at the beginning of the loading head just to touch up the necks after tumbling off the lube.

I just received a reply from Doug Giraud. Current turnaround time is about a week or two, but the shipping he quoted was $90. It's a lot for shipping something that compact. What did the shipping cost you when you bought it? I dread to think about ordering holders and cutter for different calibers in the future.

No experience with the Dillon but bought a Giraud trimmer about 3 yrs ago. Worth every penny in my opinion. I had a Wilson stainless trimmer with micrometer adjustment and although very precise, was very time consuming especially when you factor in chamfer and deburring after the fact.

Don't worry the Dillon is a good trimmer, if you want to have your jaw hit the floor, have a look at the trimmer I am considering.... Starts at $50,000 USD
