I was in the market for a second 9mm to complement my CZ P-09, after spending several weeks looking at different options I came across this Girsan Regard at G4C at too good of a price to pass up, I've always wanted a classic Beretta 92/M9 type pistol. After picking it up from the post office I learned the disassembly & reassembly and give it a good cleaning to get it ready for it's maiden voyage. I don't have a bona fide Beretta to compare this to (I have handled them at stores) but I was surprised at the level of fit and finish and lack of plastic parts for a gun at this price. The gun locks up very nicely and the machining feels to be high quality with no sharp or rough edges. The blued finish looks good and feels like it will last. I found the grip felt a little too thick for my taste and I had trouble actuating the magazine release easily. The trigger seems heavy (in DA) but more on that in the range report below

After a long wait I received my reg. certificate in the mail and got to take it out this afternoon and put about 200 rounds through it. Here's my range report;

- I started the gun off with some factory ammo, it cycled Remington UMC 124gr with no failures or stoppages. Accuracy was okay but I think the results might have been spoiled by my handgun shooting skills being a little rusty (it was my first time out in about 6 weeks.) as accuracy improved considerably later, how much of this is due to me warming up versus the ammo is uncertain :)

- The DA trigger pull is very heavy, but feels smooth. The SA trigger is perfectly acceptable in my opinion and if it wasn't for the heavy DA pull I'd say this gun has a good trigger.

- The grip is indeed a little too big for my hand, I have to change my grip to actuate the mag release. It's a little uncomfortable but still useable. I may have to adjust my grip as I find the thumb position I like to take tends to cause me to ride the slide release and the slide would sometimes lightly scrape my thumb while cycling, but it wasn't enough to cause any pain or significant discomfort.

- After the factory ammo I tested some of my 124gr handloads and got promising results. Only 1 stoppage that was due to a light load and accuracy was good. All shots were nicely within a fist-sized group at 10 yards with a slight tendency to the left of point of aim. At 25 yards the left tendency became stronger and I'm thinking I will need to adjust to the windage on the rear sight to account for that.

Overall I am quite happy with my Regard. I don't have a Beretta to compare it to but I'd like to think the Girsan is a better value considering the price difference. I think it will be a keeper in my collection for some time. I will probably still consider my CZ my "go-to" pistol but I think this is different enough that it has a unique place in my collection rather than just being a "backup" gun.

After doing some research on Beretta 92 parts compatibility I have decided to order some parts to do a few modifications;

- I ordered a Mcarbo Pro trigger kit to reduce and smoothen the trigger pull further, out of all my research this is by far the most commonly suggested upgrade for any Beretta 92 or clone.
- I ordered some thinner grips from Lok Grips, they were having a 4th of July sale and even with shipping it is still cheaper than any options I could find domestically.
- I ordered some Mec-Gar Beretta 96 magazines, I couldn't find any 92 mags but my research indicates they will function and hold more than 10 rounds while being perfectly legal in the eyes of the RCMP :d. I will update the thread on their performance with the Girsan.
- I ordered a Beretta stainless steel guide rod and spring and oversized magazine release from Stoeger Canada, I'm hoping the new mag release will be easier to use than the stock one.

Anyways that my report on the Regard, I will update the thread as the new parts come in and if there are any further developments. If anybody is looking at these and has any questions let me know I can try to answer to the best of my ability.

Cheers,

Izzy

I have a pair of them, compact with rail and full size without. They are good solid 92F copies (not 92FS), shot them OEM and no issues, only upgrades were Wolf springs (2lbs heavier then stock Beretta, Turk springs are pretty light) and clipped 2 coils off the hammer spring so it is like a D spring.
They are reliable and durable, and pretty accurate for a combat style pistol.
I got these a while ago when they were $400, tenda had them on for not much more than that recently, definitely a bargain.
92 grips don't quite fit right, slightly different profile, can make them fit nicely with some profiling. However, I don't think you will find anything slimmer then the OEM grips that came on it.
Only negative review I've ever seen was on here when a guy bouht one used and the sights were not lined up to his liking and apparently sorting that out was too much work for him lol.
Enjoy the pistol, nice soft shooting guns, I have big mitts so the grips suit me well, actually really like the finger grooves on them.
I do like the compact rail a little more, just a bit more 9mm sized, and feels more 9mm designed.

The DA grip and long first shot pull on these Beretta pattern guns has been a issue for a lot of shooters.

Are the Girsan copies aluminum or steel framed?

The Girsan Regard I had at one time (sold it about two years ago) was stainless steel with aluminum frame. Can't speak for all of them though.

Mine definitely has a aluminum frame, I tested with a magnet when I was determining what parts were steel. Relevant to that the trigger and mag release are both made of steel.

I've had one of the compacts (beretta centurion copy) it was very good. Sold it when needed to thin the hurd, but i would get one again. Also have a beretta 92 and girsan is not too far behind in quality.

Good review, thanks! I have been thinking on one. If you don't mind my asking, how long was your wait for the Reg. Certificate to arrive? I am waiting on one myself. Patiently, I think, or at least I am trying.

Too long, I never seem to get a consistent delivery time for registration certificates. I've had cases where I receive it only 5 days after the transfer was approved all the way to a 4 week wait after transfer approval. If you have the time you can call the CFP and ask if it's been mailed yet. I think it's ridiculous in this day and age that a .pdf copy cannot be sent and presented as a valid registration.

Thank you for your review. Congrats on the purchase.

I purchased Girsan Regard MC last year but could take it to the range just this week when the covid restriction was lifted. It is the first gun that I ever had, and I never thought a gun could be different than :
but I was surprised at the level of fit and finish and lack of plastic parts for a gun at this price. The gun locks up very nicely, and the machining feels to be high quality with no sharp or rough edges
. Girsan looks solid and well built.

The question, Is it any way to check that my Girsan shooting well? I'm not a big specialist and can't say that signs and rear signs align properly. How can I get sure that when I missed the problem in me and not in a gun? (of course in me ) :) Take it to the gunsmith or ask somebody at range to shoot from my gun, somebody who more experienced than me?

Thread Update No .1

Hey Guys,

Just got back from taking the Girsan out on it's second range trip, put another 250 rounds through it with no hiccups. I received some of the parts and upgrades I ordered so I thought I would update the thread with new information.

1. I ordered 2 Mec-Gar Beretta 96 magazines (nickel finish), as expected they will fit, feed and function with 13 rounds of 9mm. The magazines themselves seem to be of superb quality and were sold for a reasonable price, since I didn't mention it earlier the 2 magazines included with my purchase are also Mec-Gar (marked "Made for Girsan by Mec-Gar") and seem to have the same quality and construction as the Beretta magazines but in a blued finish.

I had no issues with either magazine and will probably buy another soon to bring my total number of magazines to 5. I am considering purchasing a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 with the multi-mag system and setting it up to use Beretta mags. I think the Kel-Tec + Girsan would make a pretty fun combo for range days (I'm not a Glock owner and don't have any immediate plans to become one, so I think this is a good alternative if you want a PCC and handgun with full mag compatibility at an affordable price).

2. I received my package from Stoeger Canada with the oversized magazine release and SS guide rod and recoil spring. The new guide rod is nice but I'm unsure if it offers any significant advantage over the OEM Girsan one, which is also steel. I understand the new production Berettas have a plastic guide rod in which case the advantage is apparent. However it does look quite snazzy along with the new "golden" recoil spring, which is significantly longer and heavier than the OEM one. I used the new guide rod and recoil spring today at the range and it functions well and does seem to make a small but notable difference in the recoil energy coming back into my hands.

I also received the Mcarbo kit which includes a 15lb recoil spring, I meant to take it along today along with the OEM to do a 3-way comparison but forgot, however if I ever get around to doing it I will update the thread. I expect the results will be similar as when I compared the two they seems to have a similar spring rate but the Beretta spring was still noticeably longer.

The new magazine release makes a huge difference for me, it's much easier to actuate and I don't have to adjust my grip as much or hunt with my thumb like I did with the original. It was a bit of trouble to install (all the videos I watched made it look effortless) but with a little persistence and patience (and a 30-minute hunt for the spring guides) I was able to get it in. I would 100% recommend this upgrade to anybody that does not like the normal release.

3. As mentioned above, I received the Mcarbo Pro Trigger kit. I have not completely installed it yet as I'm still hunting down the right tools and time to do the job right. However I did take the time to install the included Hammer spring to lighten up the DA trigger pull a bit. The kit includes a 14lb, 13lb, and a 12lb spring. I installed the 12lb spring and in DA there is a notable decrease in weight (I don't have a gauge to measure) and an increase in the smoothness as well. I had no FTF's with the hammer spring, my current reloading recipe uses Winchester primers, not sure how hard those are but if anybody knows of any ammo with especially hard primers let me know and I can try and test it out.

It's also worth noting that the Girsan uses a roll pin to retain the hammer spring cap and not a push pin like modern USA made Berettas. This means that you don't compress the lanyard loop to remove the cap, you need to use a hammer and punch (it took a significant amount of force for mine) to drive out the roll pin. I plan on replacing this part at some point in the near future as it was a lot more trouble to remove and install than the push pin.

I plan to complete the rest of the trigger job (including polishing) once I some proper roll pin punches and a bench block. I also need to find some felt polishing tips for my Dremel and some Flitz compound.

I'll try to post another update once I got the trigger job complete and receive my Lok grips.

Cheers,

Izzy

Hi,
Do you think this kit will fit for Regard?

Beretta .22LR Conversion Kit for 92 Series
https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...256-Beretta-22LR-Conversion-Kit-for-92-Series

Hard for me to say, I don't have access to a Beretta 92 to compare the slide and frame rails side-by-side. I remember reading a post on AR15.com from 2019 that said the slides were close, but they did not fit on the other respective frames. Unless your willing to take the risk of it not working I wouldn't go for that. If you're just looking at buying a Regard and don't have one yet, I might suggest you look at a surplus 92S instead. That would probably be compatible with the slide for around the same price point as the Girsan.

Thanks. I will not take a chance, especially when I can't check it in real life.
I have the same Girsan Regards MC, different colour. My first gun, and I'm pretty happy with it. Just trying to find Beretta 92FS .22LR to practice with the same model and to spend less money on ammo. Cabella's US has it, but they are not delivering to Canada.
