I have acquired a Thompson (sp?) percussion rifle. It is complete, but there are no accessories or instructions.

What preliminary inspections should I do on it? What basics will I need to start shooting?

Any info/advice appreciated.

ensure gun is clean, ensure nipple is not plugged, you SHOULD get a powder measure, a capper, a good ramrod /fibreglas or other, a short starter , caps /powder ( pyrodex or real black powder 2f or 3f type, ) proper calls fer your calibre? patching material,
thats a start ....................................then maybe a powder horn, or possible bag, to put it all in most things can be made or obtained easily.
good luck.

A picture is worth. Short starter, capper and nipple wrench

I agree with NB. Get in touch with someone that is active in the B.P. shooting fraternity. Hands on lessons and the question and answer sessions are worth more than any book can teach you. Books are good reference material but experience has no substitute.
Carry on!!
