It was stored in an attic for many years..missing the bolt and trigger gaurd
real rusty and the wood was shortened at some time
He said he cant have things that go boom so i said hey i can come get it from you if you like and showed him my pal..

Is this thing worth anything ?
Shes in pretty tough shape
will post a pic tonight when i get home

Desert_Fox is probably spot on.

A sported, bad shape M1917 with no bolt is not exactly a prize.

But on the plus side, if you can track down a bolt, you have a great action for a custom build. Probably want to arma coat it since I'm guessing the bluing is pooched.

Hahhaha there was blueing ?
Yea shes pretty rough ...was free so you know beggers cant be choosers
He was working on the house when he found it ...and since he cant have things like this ..put it outside lol..that might have actualy helped it ;-)
Figured it aint worth much ..but i dident like hearing where it was stored..it suffered enough in the attic ;-(

REMINGTON P-17s are not precisely common.

FAR too many have already been "sportered".

Let's see what the old girl looks like before we condemn her to an ignominious existence for evermore.

Once Upon A Time, she was one of the BEST combat rifles in the world.

That should at least be respected.

I have seen rust about that bad removed very nicely, revealing lots of original finish.

FINE Steel Wool is the tool of choice, mixed with gentle wiping. You only oil AFTER the ust-removal has progressed. If you have yto srub it again, DEGREASE before going at it.

She hasnt been chopped. You have enough there to start a Resto Project..... if you have the nerve.

Good luck!

What a good score. Looks pretty rough, but as suggested with elbow grease (not available in all stores) it could clean up. I parted ways with my p17, but not because it wasn't a good rifle. Very slick action, and plenty accurate. 30-06 is readily available too.

Have seen bolts in the EE within the last few months too.

I'd start by cleaning up what you have. It may just be an exercise, but may also turn out to be a good 'un.

It looks past the point of no return to me...but like you I'd probably try and see what happens...you may be surprised.

That is not just surface rust. It has what a collector would call a "patina" and I would call a lot of rust. I think as mentioned before, a hot tank in a rad shop. The bore may be a sewer pipe. Even at that, if I had it I would try to clean it up just for the hell of it but I wouldn't give you $25 for it.
Have fun

I'd give you 25 bucks for it...ugly guns are not necessarily bad guns. It will probably never look arsenal fresh, but may yield a fine, functional shooter.

...start with the bore. If it shows pretty enough, it should prove worth your aesthetic efforts. The rest can be found with patience. If the bore is awful, it's still a fine test bed for learning about 'ol rifle clean ups.

A small part of me likes showing up at a hunting camp with a rifle that appears to have been brought up from the depths of the Atlantic, getting teased for it THEN shooting a cloverleaf during the gang's sight in!

Well ...I ran the bore cleaner tool from my Mosin thru her tonight ..near no rust came out.
I had expected a pile of it to fall out
so i put a light to it ...OMG theres plenty of rifleing in this gun she aint a sewer pipe at all.
i expect with some work it will again be a good accurate rifle
:D
