Bonjour a notre voisin!

The Globe conversions were done at a time when 7.62x54 Russian was absolutely unavailable. The Cold War was in full battle and unless a fellow had found some friendly ex-Czech or ex-Finnlander who knew someone who could get some .... (you get the picture). On the other hand, .303BR was being issued by the 48 round box by every regimental rifle association. Globe Firearms in Vanier, Ontario (Mortie English?) had a bunch of Finnish captured SVTs to sell. His solution was to remanufacture them as Globe Mohawk .303 semi-autos. Yours is one.

Now the bad news. A replacement SVT magazine will cost you about as much as you paid for the rifle. Canada Customs has ideas of their own about what is acceptible to import.

After having worked on two of these abortions, I would value them at whatever a cut down SVT mag is worth. Both had terrible headspace issues, one was so bad I advised the owner to never fire it. An SVT mag should run you 120 bucks IF you can find one. The rifle with a mag is worth about 150 bucks, without a mag it is worth whatever a bolt carrier and trigger group command... The rifle with the severe headspace issues was a SA marked SVT38. I cried a little bit when I saw that...

"...7.62x 54r was available..." Not when Globco bubba'd those rifles. Most of which have bad headspace and are not safe to shoot with any ammo. The rifles use a 10 round mag and must be pinned to 5.
Original 7.62 x 54R mags run $150US.

You would have better success trying to get a romak mag (a cousin of the SVD). Apparently they can be made to fit with slight modifications, and only cost about $50.

to my knowledge,Globe simply inserted a .303 reamer into the SVT barrel and went from there-hence the brass and headspace problems-$100 in the 197(1,2.3?) Sears catalogue-same as a Win M-94
