Glock 17 FS & 17 GNS

But seriously though, I think FS means "Fixed Sights", and GNS, "Glock Night Sights": they're fixed too.

I would recommend going with standard fixed sights. There are plenty of options for night sights, or fibre optic sights. Don't spend the extra money unless you really like the stock night sights or really need them. The factory fixed(or adjustable) sights are plastic, and they're generally crap. They work, but they don't abuse too well.

G17 will be an excellent choice for a first pistol, I'd stick with just the standard model, they can be had very affordably these days. I personally would advise you to avoid the HK's as a first gun on the passing note a poster above mentioned. The Glock will do everything an HK does and all at a much lower cost, with less less expensive accessories such as sights, mags, holsters, and replacement parts. Make that you can actually get replacement parts even, and every part is changeable essentially without tools.

I've got both and I don't agree with Ardent's comment about the Glock doing every the HK can do. I definitely shoot better with my HK and find it to be much better looking than the ugly duckling Glock. However, I do agree that parts and accessories are much more abundant and cheaper than the HK. Again, for your first pistol and the new pricing for Glocks (half the price of a USP), I don't think it's a bad idea to go for the Glock first then into the HK.

Glock 17 is an EXCELLENT choice!! Think of all the left over $$$ you will have for ammo and accessories.

my first gun is a glock 17 and i would say i'm damn happy with it, i also got the advantage arms 22lr conversion kit for it, and i'm happy with that too,
i'm happy with my " ugly duckling " but i'm dreaming about other guns too:dancingbanana:

I've had numerous USP's (assuming this is the gun we're discussing from HK), a Mk23, P7M8, P7 PSP, P7M13, etc etc owned them all... not one outperformed my G17, G17L, G22, or G20 in any substantial fashion. More accurate, at times, yes, but only marginally. Glock's not my favorite gun, but if I had to choose only one handgun it would indeed be a Glock.

dont' g17's usually come with the trijicons?

Night sights are an option. Glocks can be had with our without night sights.

Justin 1628,
Your post indicates clearly that YOU shoot better with the USP. No one seems to understand that accuracy or rather consistency has nothing to do with the firearm. The shooter is what makes the pistol run. Ardent 7 is correct. When comparing base pistols, the Glock will achieve anything an HK, SIG, Beretta, S&W, Springfield, Walther, or CZ can do. In most cases, for less money. Some folks can shoot Glocks very well, for some they may never be able to shoot them. When comparing the inherent/intrinsic accuracy of the pistol. There is no difference between any of the major makes or models.

Agreed, that this is only my experience. But I can only speak for myself. I've also mentioned that dispite I shoot better with the USP, that for the money he should go for the Glock and see how he likes handguns in general first. Can't beat $599+taxes & shipping for a Glock 17 with standard fixed sights. :D

What is the difference between Glock 17 FS and 17 GNS?

I am thinking of buying G17 as my first handgun.

Thanks.

I have a G17 FS(fix sight) and the sight picture is very clear, Pick up target very fast and dead on. Some don't like the sight is plastic but I don't mind that. Now that ugly baby is dirt cheap and to be a very good choice. M&P is better made but still there are little bugs need to work out by Smith.

Keep one thing in mind if you choose to go with a Glock and wish to reload to keep costs down. Polygonal rifling DOES NOT like lead, and IIRC lead voids Glocks warranty. Otherwise, add the cost of an aftermarket barrel with standard rifling. Other than that, Glocks are alright.

The best thing about Glocks is their low bore axis, the rest is just straight up utilitarian, which is still a good thing. The bore axis however only a couple other mainstream pistols can compete with, the P7's the only one that comes immediately to my mind. Look at an HK, 1911, SIG, or Beretta and reference the height of the bore in comparison to a comparable Glock. This makes the Glock seem to recoil less, with less sight picture disruption, through the more straight back recoil plane.

This confuses me. For a gun community who as a whole feel the Glock is ugly. We have many who proclaim that other blatant copies of the Glock are "better built" and/or "better looking". The mod that IM Luger did to his M&P(which looks good IMO) only served to enhance the M&P's similarity in appearance to the Glock lineup.

How, and/or what makes the M%P better built is what I would like to know.

Bladerogers,

The use of any reloaded ammunition voids the warranty on Glock pistols, not just lead. I personally don't shoot reloads but have many friends who do. All of which use lead reloads through their stock Glock barrels. If you clean the gun after every shooting session there's no issue with lead build up in Glock OEM barrels.
