glock 17 gen 3 or 4??

Doesn't really matter, both are good. People will say the Gen 4 is unreliable but it's not true. My Gen 4 has ~2200rds through it, no problems yet.

The Gen 4 offers adjustable backstraps, textured grip, bigger and L or R mag release. The Gen 4 recoil spring is supposed to reduce recoil. If it does it's not a lot. Trigger housing is slightly different.

I think the part I don't like about the Gen 4 is the fact that some accessories for it are different like 22lr conversions, recoil springs (although you can backdate that) and a few other things like plugs and magwells.

This is a very vague question...bcuz lots of guys will sway both ways...I have shot both and the backstraps on the Gen4 is awesome if you need that compatibility...I personally have a gen 3 and I love it!

I finally got a Glock when the gen 4 came out.

For my hands the grip was too large and the mag release impossible to hit without changing my grip on the gun. Gen 4 those things were fixed and I enjoy shooting it.

Yo strait up da 3rd geniration. Da 4th be to new and it could jam n shyt. Da 3rd be more reliable cuz it be older strait up All glocks da best but tha 3rd mo betta son. All da ballas on da street still be using da third

I have big hands.....does that make gen 4 better...........I just want thoughts.....I can afford either. I liked the 3 because it looked simpler.

thanks guys!

If you have big hands a gen 3 may work for you.

It doesn't work for me. Can't hit the mag release on a gen 3 without shifting my grip which makes it pretty much useless for IPSC or IDPA comp.

Probably good advice to fondle some or better shoot both. BTW I have around 2000 rounds through my Glock 17 ten 4 without a hiccup.

The backstraps only make the distance from the front to the back of the grip larger. It mostly adjusts your reach to the trigger. That being said I wear a size 8.5 glove and I can shoot both backstraps and without the backstrap just fine, it doesn't matter to me. YMMV.

Like Dirt says, most people go with the Gen 3. I think it is because they are scared of change. I haven't met anyone in real life that had problems with a Gen 4. There are 'cyberfolk' who have lol.

Yes, as has been said, it comes down mostly to personal preference.

I have both. I prefer the Gen3 as it fits me fine and the finish is much nicer. Glock stopped using ''tennifer'' finish with the Gen4. Scratches easier and has more of a matte finish.

I don't think Glock would do a RSA exchange program if the Gen4's problems were of ''cyberfolk'' origin...

At this point, the best chance of getting a good Glock 17 would be a used 3rd generation model. Even some of the newer 3rd generation guns have been having problems. When subject matter experts like Todd Green, Ken Hackathorn, and Dr. Gary Roberts say there are problems, it goes beyond mere errornet rumours.

Most of them seem to work well enough, but the percentage of lemons is too large to be ignored. Some examples will work fine out of the box, but start to develop problems after around a couple thousand rounds.

if you don't need the adj strap and large mag release just get a gen 3.

so much more parts are available and easy to get.

Either. The only reason to get a new one would be comfort factor. If the old one works for you get it. If you prefer the feel of the new one. Get that. Both are good guns. People just tout the reliability of the Gen 3's because they are proven. Early Gen 4's had some hiccups but they look to have been smoothed out.

If the gen3 feels comfortable and you can actuate the mag release without changing your grip, get the gen3. It has superior reliability. This is not opinion, but fact.

The vast majority of gen4 shooters report flawless operation, but others have experienced problems.

A good reputation is the hardest thing to earn and the easiest thing to lose. The gen3's have earned their reputation and represent the pinnacle of glock's reliability to date.

I am a glock shooter and am partial to the gen3's for this reason. The gen4's have new features and are great guns, but unfortunately have not yet been proven as reliable as the gen3's.

If reliability is paramount, gen3 wins.
