Glock 17 Gen 4, Glock 19x, or Walther PPQ M2

Thinking of buying a new 9x19 workhorse.

Looking for something under $850-$900.

My top two contenders are the Glock 17 Gen 4 and the Walther PPQ M2 (Navy).

I've shot the Glock a few times and find it ridiculously comfortable, but I've heard a few bad things lately in terms of reliability with the mag followers, triggers getting worn (really?!?), and some otherwise silly issues. I'm not sure if any of these issues carry forward on the Glock 19X as well--I hear they're ridiculously sturdy, but have yet to see the dates for the Canadian edition.

I'm also looking closely at the Walther PPQ M2, but I've never had a chance to fire one.


Anyone have any experience with either of these handguns to lend some insight?
 
Don't know about the gen4's but my gen3 G17 has seen thousands of rounds and still looks/runs like when I bought it....100% reliable!
No broken parts, just a little bit of holster "marks" on the trigger guard.
 
The PPQ has, IMO, the best polymer gun trigger on the market and is slightly more accurate ( but that could be because of the excellent trigger). Cons are expensive mags and difficult to find after market accessories and support. I also find it a bit awkward looking but that’s just personal taste. It’s also more ergonomic for some hands.

The Glock is....a Glock. Don’t believe internet rumors. I have a 30 yr old Gen 2 G19. Other than changing out the main recoil spring and a worn mag catch, the gun is still awesomely reliable and it’s seen 10000s of rounds.

If you want easy and cheap support, parts, holsters and mags, go Glock!
 
Get a G19 Gen 4 Canadian Edition. In stores now and are priced very well.

And they feature a maple leaf on the slide... which is either a big plus or a big minus... not much middle ground.
 
One thing about glock. If it breaks, parts are easily replaceable and cheap. You can't really say that about the ppq. Having said that i wouldn't go ppq navy, i would go ppq m2 5inch or q5 match. Also my glock gen4 and gen5 have been great. You can't go wrong buying either brand.
 
The PPQ has, as previously been mentioned, an excellent trigger and really has accuracy capabilities that Glocks would dream about. The PPQ M2 series will shoot with the best of the combat/competition guns in most hands. Build quality is excellent. Mags run around $65. The guns feature polygonal rifling with a stepped chamber. The latter goes back to a design feature introduced by Mr.Luger years ago. My experienced eyes are good to about 15 yards for finer accuracy work and I can manage <1" groups off a bench and also when I get lucky freestyle. Beyond 15 yards my eyes manage minute of apples or cantaloupe at 25 yards at best. :>) Those results are better than I have ever been able to achieve with my M&P Pro, or a number of CZ Variants and clones. All that said I am no Annie Oakley...the gun, in my hands does make a difference.

From what I have seen reported and evidence of, the Gen 4 Glocks were not as good as the Gen 3. The finish was changed from Tennifer for starters and the slides have a reputation of breaking at the nose of the slide and near the rear with heavy use. The Gen 5 version of the gun corrects this design flaw by redesigning the slide. The Gen 5 trigger has been improved as well with it's redesign. If you go Glock I would go with the Gen 3 or chance Glock got it right, with the Gen 5. At the end of the day it will still be a Glock with a huge loyal following, a history of excellent reliability and after market parts for sights and trigger components. It is the darling of Military's and LEO Departments mostly because the guns are sold for far less than your local gun shop will be able to sell the gun to you.

I would add the 320 SIG is the dark horse in any race to a gun vault. The gun has gun through some high use teething problems but those have been corrected. It will have more support than a palliative care centre with it being the chosen gun of the US Army and now the US Marines. I have not put one in my safe yet but oh the wallet wants to open up. My limited experience with the gun tells me it is a real shooter and most could do a lot worse for IDPA/ASC/3 Gun or recreational use in IPSC Production.

I own the Glock but would love the PPQ. My only hangup is barrel length on the PPQ. I don't like the threaded barrel sticking out and not a fan of the way the 5" PPQ looks.

No particular preference--it's available in most places I've looked at.

I've heard all the same good stuff about the Glock 17 Gen5, I just haven't seen any in stock anywhere near me. I also like the Sig 320 (the 320 RX was just featured in an endurance test in Guns & Ammo) but haven't yet held one to know how it feels.

If anyone local in the Peg has one and wouldn't mind joining me for a range day at FLGC, I'd love to give it a try.

As for the CZ guns, I've never really found them that comfortable. Sig 226/229 feel wonderful in my hands, so I wouldn't mind trying the 320. Fired the M&P Pro before and didn't mind it, but I really love the feel of the Glock 17 over and above it.

They have a good rep and if you order out of province you only pay GST, no PST. A lot of these places have free or very cheap shipping now also.

I was in the US on the weekend - handled and dry fired a bunch of Walthers PPQ's (Navy, M2) and very impressed with trigger and ergonomics but as stated previously in this thread have a bit of concern with after sales service if something breaks.
 
You will buy a Glock!(Recommend the 17 in gen 3, if the finger grooves work for you)

Everyone does, get it over with already.

I have a PPQ M2 and a Glock 22 Gen 4. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

With the PPQ I don't plan on doing any upgrades to it. Maybe just some sights, but that's it. The
Glock needs more attention like trigger work, sights, etc.

Glock mags are easy to find and easily replaceable. My PPQ mags are definitely more solid and I don't
think I'll be replacing them as often as the glock ones.

I look at the 2 guns as one you buy and just shoot and the other is you buy then upgrade and accessorize
then shoot.

Ordered mine there 2 weeks ago, every time i send an email they reply within 10 minutes, almost unbelievable!
Not in yet since CFO is slow at Easter, or slow registering all my provinces long guns :rolleyes:

Another vote for why G17 gen 5 did not make the list?
