Alright, there have been 500 posts like this one I am sure but there we go again. So I never bought a pistol before and I am ready to buy now. I have been looking online for a while but I can't make up my mind. I will get my ass to a store to handle them to feel the up, I know this needs to be done.

It seems that most people agree that a Glock 17 is a good first time gun buyer. However, I am not a huge fan of double action only guns. (I believe the 17 is correct?)

Anything wrong with going MP9 or PX4 Storm? Feedbacks? You owned one? How did you like it?

I always advise a first time handgun owner to get a DA/SA with a Decocker or safety for a first pistol. however my choice of the three listed is the G17

check out the SIG P226,Beretta 92FS,CZ75B for DA/SA

M&P9 is double action only too. With a modded trigger I prefer M&P9. Stock I prefer Glock. I prefer DA da only to DA/SA as the trigger pull is consistent.

They are all good pistols in their own regards. Everyone who chimes in this thread will tell you to pick the one they like best.

Truth be told the best pistol for you is the one that feels best in your hand erganomically and makes your tally wacker move a little when you see it. My sugestion is to find people who own these three pistols and see if they will let you try them.

I for one own a MP9, can't stand Glocks and like generally anything Beretta makes and sells including the PX4 storms. My suggestion is to go with the Storm as it is single and double action.

Glock or M&P. You can't go wrong with either. Personally, I prefer Glock triggers for their distinct tactile reset.

P.S. Action classification of these handguns are tricky at best. They're both "preset/pre-cocked striker fired DAO". That's a mouth full, lol, but it's probably the closest thing to a proper description. Does it matter? Not really, just an FYI...

My first was a glock 22. It's awesome but is kind of boring. At least with a single double you have a couple different trigger pulls to get used to and I love cocking the hammer and decocking. Just picked up a px4 brand new for 650 at Al flaherty's, sale is on till the end of April. Glock is my go to if #### happened, but the beretta gets the attention when I'm dry firing and just generally being awesome. Then again magazines for the beretta are more expensive. As for trigger pull I don't notice much difference between the glock and beretta in SA. Both are great IMO.

For me, it would be the Glock 17 (though I really like my Beretta 92FS). A lot of people are not fans of the stock MP9 trigger. I found I had to get used to it (or you could just change it out). So, for a stock gun, I would say Glock.

Flip a coin between the Glock or M&P. Run, don't walk, away from the Beretta PX4. They have a penchant for locking up, such that a rubber mallet is required to get them apart.

If you have the opportunity, rent and shoot a bunch.

Out of the box:
S&W - hated the trigger, but loved the grip
Glock - trigger was much better, sights were so so and grip was ok

I felt both needed some improvements anyways. So at the time, parts, standard pinned mags and aftermarket mods were plenty and readily available for Glocks, which was the deciding factor. My G34 is modded to the point where I'm very happy with it.

A STI 2011 is on my wishlist, but unfortunately it is above my pay grade.

Glock

Pros:

Crisp trigger
100% reliable (Gen 1-3, I've heard Gen 4 can have ejection issues between certain serial numbers, but I've had no problem with my Gen 4 17)
Has proven itself with military and police forces for over 30 years
Simple

Cons:

Cost
Standard sights. Seriously Glock, it's been 4 generations, why haven't you fixed this?

M&P

Pros:

Cost. For around $700 bucks you can get the range kit with 3-4 mags, a holster, a mag holder and speed loader
Sights

Cons:

Creeky trigger

That's it for now

^ This. The M&P with the factory trigger is horrible. To me it feels like it's full of sand. I put the APEX trigger kits in both my M&P's and they are a totally different pistol; not perfect but 90% better. If your not going to do the trigger go with the Glock. My wife has the PX4 storm. It is a B1TCH to get mags for this pistol. It's also a rotating barrel unlike the other 2. It shoots well, but I would avoid it for your first pistol.

I have both Glock 17 and M&P 9. Stock, I prefer the Glock simply because of the reset on the trigger. Better for me as I want to shoot Production class in IPSC.

Both are stupid easy to disassemble and clean, and I would say you can't go wrong with either. My advice is to hold both and fire a few rounds before you buy.

On a side note, I have 3000+ rounds through the Glock and only a 1000 rounds through the M&P. But the M&P barrel shows more wear. I clean and oil the wear spots religiously so I found this a bit different.

The only time I have seen this happen, is when they're run with a completely dry central block. This is all due to the rotating barrel. If you oil and maintain it, it will run flawlessly.

As for which to select, I would recommend either the M&P or the Glock. I own all 3, and I prefer the hammerless pistols. It's really a toss up between the two and will likely come down to ergonomics. Handle both and see which fits your hand and go for it.

Love my M&P.....but the trigger could use an upgrade, my last one was loose, this one is tight and a long squeeze

I have also shot the PX4 and it is a nice pistol as well.

I don't think any of the choices are bad ones, but like a few have said, it's much better for you if you can get out and try them in your hand and maybe fire each of them just to get a feel of what fits better for you
