so i have a question and this is it:

ive always been curious about the G19.
i have a G17 and its a fine gun.
reason im curious about the G19 is that i like the 1911 and when i picked up my first commander size 1911 i totally fell in love with the small size - so im thinking that since i 'like' the G17 i may 'love' the G19 because of its smaller size as well??

does that make sense?

so ive been watching the G19's last year or so and i have some extra scratch right now and thought i might look at picking on up.

so after doing a lot of looking it looks like i have a decision to make between 2 versions of the Glock.

i can get a Gen3 G19 for a steal of a price, brand new around $750 give or take.
this has the longer barrel and its threaded and has higher sights (which i have on one of my M&P's and i kinda like the higher sights).

so thats looking good.

so i went and looked at some Gen4 G19s and im finding the prices are around $1250 give or take.

so this is the rub..... is the Gen4 G19 worth $500 more than the Gen3 G19?

keeping in mind i already have a Gen3 G17C so i can use those mags with the G19 Gen3 but not the Gen4 if what im reading is right.

so i loose the doubled recoil spring and interchangeable backstraps and the tapped top slide for RMR - but are those couple things worth an increase of $500???????

i already run a gun with a RMR and have no plans to run this G19 with a RMR.
and really if i wanted too i could send it over to Dlask and have him machine the slide for $120 if i ever wanted to go that route.

so far im really leaning towards the Gen3 unless someone can come in and show me something im missing on the Gen4 that is a deal breaker?!?!?!?!?!

thanks for the help guys.

(just spent the last 2 hours watching youtube video's comparing the Gen3 and Gen4)

Cant compare them but cant get over how my G19 Gen4 with a 106 mm LW barrel is exceptional...

The lucky move here was to buy it, because, it was a long shot, would have never know nothing about it would have i passed on it...

I know i doesnt help but it's sincere... JP.

The main difference between the G17 and the 19 is not only the shorter slide but a shorter grip. You said you were thinking about the 19 after fondling a Commander. The Commander has the same size grip as the normal 1911. If you have big hands, you may find the 19 grip a bit short regardless of Gen 3 or 4.
PS for a $500 difference, I'll take the Gen3 anytime. It's a Glock. It works.

I have a gen4 G17 and it hits my hand great, much better than gen 3. I did have a G23gen4 but have to say the grip was just too short and didn't feel as well as a full size.

A gen 4 is absolutely NOT worth the extra 500 bones. All the guys on the EE trying to sell their gen 4's are asking pretty much what they paid or more back when Glock 19's were more or less rare in Canada.
I've got a gen 4 17 and a gen 3 19, and all though I do prefer the gen 4 grip I love the size of a 19.
As mentioned, if you have larger hands you can probably throw a micro magwell on it to solve the issue. I found when I got my 19 my pinky felt like it was going to slip off so I added an agency arms magwell and now it's my go to handgun.

Here's my take. I've handled the g17 g3 and g4, g19 g3 and g4, g21 g41 both g4. The g19 is the best fitting glock for me. The hump hits my palm in the right spot. Having said that, my problem with the g19 g3 is the grip texture. I just personally don't like it. If you have plans to stipple or add grip tape then i suggest get the g3 and save the money. However keep in mind the g4 is $1250 because of the aftermarket barrel addition. The g3 at around $900 typically has the glock threaded barrel.

so i have a question and this is it:

ive always been curious about the G19.

<snip>

does that make sense?

It does. As noted, the G19 fits the hand differently than the G17. The grip isn't just shorter, it is shaped differently as well. If you have small hands (as I do) then you will probably love the G19. If you wear an XL glove you probably won't. I know this probably doesn't help much, but if you are in the Rocky Mountain House area in the near future you can shoot my Gen. 4 G19 until you are tired of holding onto it for a test drive. Bring ammo and enjoy.

PS for a $500 difference, I'll take the Gen3 anytime. It's a Glock. It works.

I would agree. I bought my G19 when Dlask brought a batch in for ~$900 with 3 mags. A Gen. 3 for $500 less than the Gen. 4 seems like a no brainer.

I have a gen 3 g17,gen3 g19 and a gen 4 g19 with the threaded barrel from a gen3. I love them all and would not part with either. For the price I would take the gen 3 g19 my gen4 was only $900 a few years back I would not pay today's price for the small changes of the gen4

I just got my first G19, Gen 2 and I like it very much.

I agree with the other posters that a Gen 4 is not worth that much of a difference in price. Just an FYI: your gen 3 mags would work fine in a gen 4 gun as long as you don't reverse the mag release to the right side of the grip (lefty configuration).

The gen 4 is not worth any extra. Here they are 499 for a gen 3 and 539 for the gen 4 and most of that cost is just the extra magazine.

I don't have a G19 but I do have a G22. I went with the Gen 4 because I wanted to be able to try shooting it with different backstraps on it and really have a chance to settle on what is most comfortable in my hands. The difference between my 4 and 3 in terms of price was about 100 bucks. To me the extra mag and backstraps made it worthwhile. If it had been a $500 difference I'd have gone with a gen3.

this has the longer barrel and its threaded and has higher sights (which i have on one of my M&P's and i kinda like the higher sights).

I paid $1000 all in for a Gen 4 Glock 19 MOS with the silencerco threaded barrel and three 15-10 mags, grips etc. Got mine used at Prophet River, where are you finding a Gen 3 Glock 19 at $750. Sounds like extreme opposites for pricing...
