I basically know sh*t about IPSC other than I think I’ll like it a lot. Based on all the threads I’ve read so far, it sounds to me like I’ll likely get into production class once I do a black badge course. (To paraphrase another Australian member, I drink a little too much beer, I’m a little overweight, and I’d likely get along with the referees.)

That said, I own a cz75-.40 (love it) but I’d like to get a .45 as well. Many in the forum love and recommend Glocks, but the Glocks of choice seem to be the 17 or the 22. I shot a glock 22 once, loved it, but I’d really like to get a .45 in the collection.

So, any thoughts, advice, recommendations on the 21, and if not the 21, what's a good production .45 for an FNG?

i would get a 9mm for production...cheap to shoot and there is no need to go higher. If you want a 45 i would get a SS 1911 and shoot Standard.

I shot a Glock 21 for just about 2 years , mostly IPSC style club matches and two ipsc qualifiers .
At the end of the day I think a G17 or G22 would be a better gun .
Trying to get a good holster was a pain - I wound up making one ( worked great ) .
Good mag pouches are also next to impossible to get , never was happy with them .
Ammo costs are higher .
I jacked with the power factor and could get the gun gun to reliably cycle at about 140 power factor but the slide was slow moving , limiting your rate of fire . I never felt it gave any advantage but it did take all the recoil out of the gun .
The smaller frame G22 is what I would recomend - IMO

base your competition gun on the basis of applicability and usefullness IN the competition. Don't base it on what caliber you'd like to add to your collection.

a .45 is the most expensive caliber to shoot, brass is hardest to her, components are most expensive. In the Production DIVISION ( Class is GrandMaster, Master, A, B, C, or D ;) ) you would not get any extra credit for shooting the larger caliber, so it's all down side for .45.

My advice - if you want a .45, get a .45 - get whatever .45 you like/want. Get it to add to your collection. Then, for IPSC, get either a G17 (if you don't reload) or a G22 (if you reload and don't mind custom loading lower powered loads for your gun).

Not many IPSC shooters in my neck of the woods, and the few that are here all rave about the .45. Maybe it's slanting my opinion.

well, here's a question - these all these people "old timers"? .45 has a deep, emotional following among people who grew up with it, and who believe it is the best all-round round for everything. It might be the best compromise if you have to worry about animal protection AND home protection AND shooting paper targets AND fighting off a Soviet invasion AND you can only have 1 gun. But that's not what we're talking about. For the purposes of IPSC shooting (and IPSC only), .45 is not that great... It's OK, but there are cheaper, easier, etc, guns and calibers to use...

If you have your .40 CZ and you like your .40 CZ, use that!! If it is a non-modified gun (you didn't put in adj sights on it, etc), you'll even be able to shoot it in production. If not, or if there is no production in your area, shoot it in Std - get into ipsc, learn about it, have fun with it, and after a while, you'll be able to make an informed decision about what is best for you. Don't let other people impose their preferences on you. There is nothing wrong with your gun, use it to get started, and revisit the situation then.

Thanks for all the input.

Musky, I'm from Sudbury, and it pains me to say that IPSC up here is all but a thing of the past.

Omen, you're right about the deep following, and I respect the deeply held opinions of the guys I have spoken with, but I think I'm going to go my own way on this one. I've got a 1911; fun to shoot, but the more I look at .40's, the more sense it makes to me.

I think I'm going to ordering me up a Glock 22. Oddly enough, one of those "old timers" is real interested in shooting it if I buy it. Who knows, maybe I'll start a trend for once.

Thanks guys

as mentioned I have a G21 , I've also shot a G17 .
Yesterday I got a chance to shoot the G22 .
I think it has the most promise of the three .
