Well I am interested in picking up a handgun. I know most suggest the Ruger .22 for beginners, and some argue to skip that and go for a 9mm. I know some on another board recommending a good 9mm to start with.

I have shot a Glock 21 years ago. It was the first time I had ever touched a gun in my life. I havent shot anything since though. My accuracy was quite good if I do say so myself.

I am curious what people think of a Glock for a first hand gun? I am a newb , although I have fired one before. What are the prices like on them?
And ya it might seem a little hollywood'ish to ask about it but I know they are a good weapon and I didnt have any problems during my brief experience with it.

any help is appreciated.
thanks.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you go for a Glock--since it'll be your first handgun you won't have to get used to it's "unique" trigger pull--that's good! On the downside I have found Glocks not especially forgiving of sloppy shooting technique--but if you concentrate on the basics: sight alignment, trigger control and especially grip they'll reward you with excellent performance. You might not want to rule out a .22, though, as well as a centrefire.

p.s. Welcome aboard!

how to maintain it? store it in the meat freezer or in a pail of mud.. itll be fine either way..

For a beginners gun, its very simple and cost effective.

You think the police picked it cause it was complicated and needed lots of maintenance?

G17 for sure...you can also pick up one of the 22LR top end conversions and
'double your fun' for not much money.
A Glock is a required part of everyone's 'collection'!

Good info so far, thanks!

anything else in particular that would go along with it? (besides the 22LR)

will starting out on this particular gun have any ill effects on using future guns?
$800 seem reasonable . Although saving money is always a good thing. Is buying used frowned upon?

do it. my first handgun was a G22. if i had to do it over, i would have got a G17 for the cost saving in ammo. but since you can't rewind life i bought a G19 to keep it company.

Wolverine Supplies is another source for Glock's and they are a CGN sponsor as well. I believe they have the G17 with Trijicon night sights listed for $855.

A friend who shoots rifle mostly finally bought his first handgun, an Olive drab G17. Initially, he was pulling his shots to the left. Gave him a few pointers and he was shooting very well with it. I would recommend a G17 for a 'noobie'. Definitely easier to take apart and put back together than a Ruger Mk2/3....if ammo cost was a big factor then I'd lean towards a .22 pistol......

If you don't want to go the .22 route (I highly recommend it), and if you can afford it, buy it.
I had all kinds of nasty things to say about Glocks... then I fired one.
The 17 is now on my short list.

I got an XD 40 - .40S&W as my first hand gun. Personally I like the extra recoil and didn't want to go 9mm for that reason. The 40S&W ammo is nearly as cheap as 9mm and gives that little bit extra kick. :)

My next gun was a used 586 .357 magnum revolver which I like even more. It goes BANG! :dancingbanana:

My third handgun will be a .22. I'm going Browning Buckmark Camper for that one. Really only because the ammo is so cheap.

I find that if you shoot regularly - the ammo will cost more than the gun quickly. Get the gun you want but shoot it lots.

.40S&W is pretty cheap. If somebody wants to go that route with a Glock, search for "glock" in the Dealer Announcement forum.... Glock 22 (.40s&w) w/Trijicon sights = $755 with free shipping.
