I recently bought a Glock 17 for IPSC production division while my open gun is getting some TLC. Being a left handed shooter with big hands, I'm finding it damn near impossible to depress the factory mag release which is located as usual on the left side of the gun. I have looked but not found a right side mag release mechanism for the Glock. Anyone know where I could find one? I can't imagine this knocking me out of production division as you can get a Glock with a right side mag release as an option. I believe that is covered in the rule book. Anyway, any thoughts would be helpful.

If its not offered by Glock on the firearm its not allowed in production.

Acceptable mods that glock owners do include grip tape, extended mag release, extended slide release, different front and rear sites, 3.5lb connector, and a minor action job (polishing and such).

Anything beyond that will take you out of production. So unless Glock offers a reversible mag release on the G17 you cant make a change.

For what its worth I am a lefty and I shoot a G17 in production and I prefer to take my trigger finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard to press the mag release, I find its quick as I dont have to change my grip on the gun. Now, if you have bigger hands then perhaps a large frame glock would work better for you? (I have a G21, and its great too but not as competitive in production as a G17)

No fibre optic sights allowed on the Glock. I think some models of the new Glock 21 SF (.45 ACP) have an ambi mag release, but that won't help you with your 17

I'm thinkin your wrong on that one.

I was under the impression (perhaps wrongly)that if the sights were not available on the factory version of the gun (offered by Glock), then they were not Production legal? CZ has them on the Shadow, but Glock does not.

You were right once - That was the initial rule.

A couple years ago, IPSC updated the rules to allow any iron sights on any production gun, so long as you don't modify the slide to make them fit.

If that's so and it will also fit a 17, then there's a 99% chance Glock will list it as "an option" for 17s, so it will be fine.

Thanks for the helpful comments. I won't really do much modding with my Glock, other than to find a way to hit that damn mag release button. I still have no idea where to buy Glock parts. The search continues.

Those 2 items, if they are not stock Glock parts, take you out of Production.

You need to use the parts from a G35 to stay in Production.

appendix d4 - 20.3

20.3 Aftermarket grips which match the profile of the OFM standard for the approved handgun and/or the application of tape on grips is permitted, however, rubber sleeves are prohibited.

you can use grip tape...

How can one use the parts from a Glock 35 to remain in production when the use of the Glock 35 is not permitted in production? We found this out the hard way and have wound up shooting our G34 and G35 in standard division.

Some of the rules and the lists of production guns needs to be updated more regularly with the changes taking place in the industry vis. a vis. new handguns.

We have just purchased some AR15's and shotguns and are looking forward to learning about three gun matches. For instance, reloading your shotgun... we have seen some guys reloading using a long tube that hangs from their belt and reloads 8 or 9 rounds in one swoop. What gives with that?

And we have seen some rude comments about ten round magazines... yet visiting a whole pile of websites find that the ten rounders are built to the exact same MilSpec parameters as 30 rounders, which have to be punched out at 5.... we are going to have fun learning about that too. All I can say is that if Mark at Questar is selling them (and Marstar as well) they carry a one hundred and fifty percent 'we'll make it work' warranty... neither would sell them if they didn't work well. That I am sure of.

And as to the G35? Well, I own one, as well as a G22 and one of the great mysteries of life seems to be what can I do to my G22 and stay in production. And why on earth is a G35 not production?

Oh well. There's always poker on Friday nights.

Problem is that there are too many rules and they are confusing. I too wish to have an ambi mag release on my Glocks. ALL of them. Make that extended ambi mag release. I too believe that there is ONE model of Glock made that has a reversed mag release although not ambi... special order? Dunno. What I do know is that it is simply INSANE not to permit someone the opportunity to reverse their mag release or go to an ambi mag release along with extended mag release (is there an extended mag release on any other production approved Glock?). Frustrating as hell to be honest. To the point that I am discarding my Glock and going to another make of handgun so that I can have an ambi mag release, etc. In production approved gun nontheless. Seems some production approved guns are more equal than others for some reason.

I think they should make Product simply "out of the box, not made for competition" guns and all others are "open class". Enough of the different classes already. How can I possibly shoot Production, Open, Standard, Major, Minor, Etc. all on one weekend morning? And if I don't get a chance to shoot with one of those blasted Eotech sites I am going to explode! They just look so neat.

Speed loaders for the shotgun, put you into open class.

I think any sport or game gets overly complex, when you have guys or professionals constantly pushing the edge, to gain some advantage. Have you ever read the official rules of golf. Where for's, how to's and why not's abound, and it is very structured. If all you want to do is go out and have fun, it certainly seems overly burdensome, but it is all done to create a level playing field.
