I was looking to add a striker pistol to my collection and decided on the Glock 17 9mm. I was pretty surprised at the cost 700-800 for a new G4. I see the US sells them around 550. Am I out to lunch or does this seem like a rip off?

There are the occasional refurbs making their way up here for around $550. Police ordinance occasionaly has some, and it might be worth asking IRunGuns if they have any.
If you want a shooter, there's nothing wrong with refurbs. A lot of them probably only shot 50 bullets a year at most, and sat in a locker the rest of the time.

Going price seems to be 750+ depending on model. I've seen lower with sales and blowouts over the years but nothing below 700 on a Gen 4. Second had Glocks hold a high after market price.... but be aware of what it is you're buying, and if you plan on keeping it stock or not - prices add up quickly with upgrades and aftermarket parts (as always).

The G22's are cheaper. Buy used in excellent condition. For instance, go to Williams Arms website under the used section and check out the price.
Not a ripoff...everything in Canada costs more than buying in the US.
Police Ordnance usually has all models. Just have to qualify.

IRG G22 U.S. police trade in just before Christmas was $469 + GST and $14 shipping with 3 pinned 15 round mags. Our $ was at 99 cents so it was a good deal. It was/is in real good shape, no scratches or marks on the frams, and 2 faint marks on the slide. I'd say 8.5/10 condition wise.

Don't forget importing is time consuming with paper work. Someone has to do it and time is money. Not to mention prices will probably go up more with our loonie taking a dive.

1. Economy of scale. Canada is smaller and has fewer gun owners, which means fewers sales. This gives US stores a bit of wiggle room to LOWER any international MSRP prices, while Canadian stores have to more or less maintain international MSRP pricing.
2. Our gun laws are stricter than the US. Importing is a PITA. Which means, your pistol has to pass through more hands to get to you in Canada than it would if you were in the US. Every hand needs to be paid. No one works for free.
If you added up all the man hours it takes to import your own pistol, then applied your hourly wage to that cost, you can see why your pistol costs more here than there.
