Glock question about caliber conversion

I've seen lots of threads, basic question, If you get a 22, swap the barrel to a 17, will it cycle reliably or will I need to change out the spring as well? I know about the mag feeding issue not being 100% reliable feeding 9mm our of .40 mags, just wondering about the springs

There are also the extractor etc that need to be changed out. It is not a simple process. I actually inquired about this myself to Police Ordnance recently. .40 mags will work in the 9mm gun though, you can apparently fit 12 rounds of 9mm, but some have said the last round or two don't feed reliably.

I'm just on the fence, I'm not a huge Glock fan, I used to call them Block's because of how blocky they are... I really like the RTF2's because of the slide serrations being curved, I don't have a .40 and don't want to invest in another caliber, I would like a new one and can only find .40's so thought since they are so cost effective, pick one up, buy a 9mm barrel and I'm golden... Oh well, I'll probably just end up with an XDM instead.
(trying to pick my Christmas present to myself)

You could look at replacement slides for Glocks, I believe if you got a whole new upper, including slide, barrel etc, that would effectively complete the conversion from .40 to 9mm, but it would be expensive. Lone wolf I believe has slides with various serrations available.

I was under the impression that you just pop in a 9mm barrel and good to go, since the slide is almost the same

here is info directly from lone wolf confirming this:

Conversion kit? If you have a Glock 22, you don't have to do anything... Just load up some 9mm and let 'er fly...

At least that's what the guy in the lane beside me tried a few weeks ago.

Here's a photo of a piece of brass I scooped...

Thank you! That answers my question.

It'll be hit and miss try it out and might need a new recoil spring...

Will have to see what's on sale for Pre-Christmas this year

I am debating to get G34 or G35 and then do 9 mm conversion, but kinda leaning to 9 mm version

The stock springs are the same weight. You cannot run a 17 barrel in a 22 slide. If you use the 40 to 9 conversion barrel you are good to go as is. 9 in a 40 mag doesn't work. The extractors are the same the ejectora are not but a 40 frame/ejector will work with 9 and vise versa.

I have been swapping G17 9mm barrels into my G22 and changing mags without problems for years. Perhaps it is different with the newer Glocks but I run Gen2's and Gen3's. I only swap the barrels on the Gen2's and only the 9mm into the G22. Flawless function. May not be the case on the Gen3's and newer.

I bought a brand new Glock 17, I also bought a GLock 22 barrel, I have a couple Glock 22 mags left from a previous pistol. I went to the range and shot some 9mm then switched to .40, shot what I had left of the .40 (200rds) and then switched back to the 9mm, not a single hiccup, all I changed was the barrel and mag. The 9mm did feed out of the .40 mags though.

So for kicks I swapped my 17 barrel into the 22 top I have. It does indeed fit but with minor issues. The muzzle isn't fully supported in the slide and there is some wiggle room at the breach. If you say you've had success with this setup then I may just have to try it. Worst case I blow up my Glock;) I also swapped barrels between my 26 and a buddies 27, seems to work the same way. For the record, you cannot move your 40 barrel into your 9 slide, it doesn't fit.

Agreed. U can go from a 9mm up to 40 without difficulty but not the reverse. The conversion barrel is still the ultimate answer as it maintains the OD dimensions on the barrel. As for using the 40mags with the 9mm, sure you can probably add about 5 or so rounds before they start puking out of the mag. Other make may have success but I have found Glocks to reject the 9mms from the 40 mag once under tension. The lips are just a wee bit too far apart and naturally you cannot alter the mag without committing a criminal offense:rolleyes:...

Absolutely true. I will take a fully functioning mag with 10rds over an unreliable higher capacity version. Not sure why some folks feel the need for additional rounds..I have never had a rampant paper target charge me at the range

15 and 17 rounds is what they were designed for and more rounds on any target is always better.

I should have said an unreliable mag not originally designed for that cartridge. I am familiar with the original designs and have a few of the hi-caps, modified of course.
