Yes, yes, I know this isn't the survival forums...but I have a newbie question about firearm storage relating to a GO Bag or Bug Out Bag.

Let's say that I hypothetically store a non-restricted rifle in an opaque bag/case, with the firearm locked properly.

Now in that same hypothetical bag/case, I also store loaded magazines in a separate unlocked compartment.

Is this legal/illegal?

From my understanding, a locked firearm (trigger lock, cable lock, etc.) in an opaque case can be transported/stored with ammunition and/or loaded magazines present.
The firearm cannot be fired, and in the case of a cable lock through the pistol grip, cannot even have a magazine loaded into the firearm.

Just curious to know if this hypothetical bag should have the ammunition stored in a locked container inside the bag itself, or if it's alright the way it hypothetically is.

I overused the word hypothetically so no one knows if I'm hypothetically doing something non-hypothetically. It's the only hypothetical way to go about it.
 
yes it's fine. you can even store the loaded mags in the same case as the gun so long as none of the mags are in the gun.

Storing Firearms Safely
•Unload and lock your firearms!
•Store the ammunition separately or lock it up. It can be stored in the same locked container as the firearm.

Non-restricted firearms
• Attach a secure locking device, such as a trigger lock or cable lock (or remove the bolt) so the firearms cannot be fired; or
• Lock the firearms in a container or room that is hard to break into.

An unloaded non-restricted firearm can be kept unlocked:
• temporarily if it is needed to control animal predators in an area where a firearm can lawfully be fired (ammunition must be kept separate or locked up); or
• in a remote wilderness area (ammunition may be kept readily accessible).

5. (1) An individual may store a non-restricted firearm only if

(a) it is unloaded;

(b) it is

(i) rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device,

(ii) rendered inoperable by the removal of the bolt or bolt-carrier, or

(iii) stored in a container, receptacle or room that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into; and

(c) it is not readily accessible to ammunition, unless the ammunition is stored, together with or separately from the firearm, in a container or receptacle that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into.

(2) Paragraph (1)(b) does not apply to any individual who stores a non-restricted firearm temporarily if the individual reasonably requires it for the control of predators or other animals in a place where it may be discharged in accordance with all applicable Acts of Parliament and of the legislature of a province, regulations made under such Acts, and municipal by-laws.

(3) Paragraphs (1)(b) and (c) do not apply to an individual who stores a non-restricted firearm in a location that is in a remote wilderness area that is not subject to any visible or otherwise reasonably ascertainable use incompatible with hunting.

a bag is not acceptable storage means according to paragraph 3 allowing the storage of ammunition with the firearm.

Solution is to buy a safe and store your BOB (free of trigger locks) inside the safe.

A bag is completely acceptable storage so long ast the bolt is removed or there is a trigger lock on the non-restricted firearm.

trigger locks have nothing to do with it.
 
a bag is not a storage device. its the same as storing it in a closet. if the firearm is not in a safe, it has to be rendered inoperable by deactivation or trigger locks. if a firearm is not in a safe, then you cant store your ammuntion with it.

I suppose that is your interprettion of the law. I've already stated mine. The fact that the laws are so poorly written that everyone can have their own interpretation is the real problem. Your way there is almost no chance of being wrong.

The way that it has been explained to me (by the girl on the other end of the phone at the AB CFO office) is that anything that requires a tool to open is "not readily broken open or into". So a soft bag with a combo lock on it would still need a knife or some other tool to open and therfore fine for storage and transport.

So i'm not calling you wrong, however I still beleive i'm right.

as previousely stated the girl from the AB CFO office told me that a soft bag was acceptable because "not readily broken into" meant you need a tool to open it. a knife is a tool.

Play it safe and do it your way there is nothing wrong with that. I however, perfer to do it my way.
 
would it not be acceptable to store your loaded mags and ammo in your bag at the front door, and have your rifle in another room with a trigger lock? once you leave your house you can ditch the trigger lock as you are now transporting.
