Go\No Go Gauge feel

The bolt should close freely. If I am setting up a target rifle, I will cut the chamber so that I can just feel the GO gauge, to insure minimum standard headspace. If the gauge can be felt firmly - never force the bolt closed on a gauge - headspace may be too tight to allow standard cartridges to be easily chambered. If the rifle is an autoloader (like M305, etc.), the bolt MUST close freely on the gauge - there is a risk of slamfires otherwise.
NO GO - With the bolt stripped, you should be able to feel the gauge when closing the bolt very gently, before the bolt fully locks. It very well might be possible to push the bolt to full locked position, but that does not give a correct reading.
Use a light touch with gauges.

Hey Guys,
What should the resistance feel like on a Go gauge? Should it slide easily closed or be tight?
Thanks.
Rob

If I want a tight chamber I will make it so at the bottom of a stripped bolt body closing I can feel it get tight on the go gauge .... otherwise as long as it closes on a go gauge and not on a no-go you are correct.

I don't buy no go gauges.

If you place one thickness of masking tape on the rear of the gauge that adds 3 thou to it and the bolt will not close on it. That is one half the tolerance of a no go gauge.

lots of ways to do this...of course the two gentlemen who replied before me are experts in this field. I'd listen to them.

The last one I did was a 243 700 factory barrel I put into a Model Seven....this one won't close on the GO gauge,..but it will chamber two brands of factory ammo with a slight bit of feel on a stripped bolt.....I'd say it's on minimum or maybe .0005 to .001 tight....better than being too long IMHO.

with belted mags there may be a better or different way...

tiriaq and guntech:...do you set up a belted mag chamber the same way?...or are there other procedures for these?

I prefer to headspace belted mags very tight on a go gauge because of the excessive tolerances in the manufacturing of the brass. A belted case is supposed to be exactly .220" from the front of the belt to the rear of the case but that does not happen.... that measurment is usually .213" to .215" .... all over the chart...

After firing a belted mag it should be headspaced on the shoulder for resizing...

Yes, you want minimum headspace on the GO gauge. Treating the case as if it were rimless when handloading will give longer case life.
