If you were making a guage, what size would it be. There has to be an easier way than checking with a primer. Am specifically thinking about large rifle size primers.

Personaly, I use the shank on a number drill. I'm not in my shop right this moment, and I don't remember which one off the top of my head as I don't do it that often. But if I remember correctly the drill I use is .209 thousands in diameter.

There is probably better ways to measure the pockets properly, but I get by on tools I already own, plus my own inovations, as I'm not a smith. One day, I hope. :)

I have a lathe and could easily turn a gauge.. I thought maybe someone had a size. I have done all the tests to see if they will stay in...

Maybe use a case with an slightly loose pocket measure it for the for the "no go" gauge. I just mark any cases that feel loose with a "discard" in marker and throw them out after using them a last time for practice but I use a hand held tool to insert primers.

I have a couple of gauges that a board member makes and sells (but his name escapes me). Their use is pointless IMO - I bought them on a whim. Using them is very much by "feel", i.e. when it's "easy" to insert, the primer pocket is loose. As discussed, once you can force a primer in by pushing, it's time to crush and discard after the next use.
