God wish Midway sold to Canadians

It's a huge permitting hassle for retailers to ship rifle scopes to Canada from the U.S. That's why they won't sell to Canadians. Getting it dropped shipped in the U.S. and bringing it back across yourself could land you in some trouble as well.

It isn't just scopes, they won't ship anything up here.

With a lot of the products they sell it's likely for the same reasons...maybe just easier to say no shipping to Canada than to have to separate what's legal and what isn't. Especially with the Americans changing the list almost daily.

Here is how it is...................

In all honesty the market to Canada would be so small it is not worth the hassle to them.

I work at an automobile dealership, we the Canadian dealers are told that these vehicles are designed to market and for use mainly in a particular demographic. The vehicles sold to our entire country is less than the city of Los Angeles, or state of California, forget which one.

So if the Canadian dealers and services departments think they have a say in what and how they sell things they have another thing coming.Wanna complain about plastic broken parts or power steering lines in -40, not gonna do much good, deal with it.They don't design jet ski's for Baffin Island or Ski-Doo's for Florida.

So essentially they don't care and focus and where the population density is, if we had 400 million people, definitely things would be different.

What I was told by Midway - a gazillion years ago by Midway themselves was: they had been shipping ITAR merchandise to Canadians sans proper export permits - popped up on the "radar screen" and fined more than they could ever recoup from sales AND prohibed from selling to Canada. Its a PITA because Midway as I recall is or was the exclusive distributor of Clymer reamers...

We aren't that far behind Chttp://www.utsandiego.com/uniontrib/20071220/news_1n20calpop.htmlalifornia I hear what you say, Most vehicles sold in Canada / USA have California emissions on them. As the dealer told me, My motorcycle, even without a cat has California emissions on it as Kawasaki finds it easier to make one motorcycle for all of North America rather than multiple emission versions. eeemaster, did you get that PM.

Midway was fined over $330,000 for exporting 250 scopes without permits. Plus their own legal costs, which were likely several times the amount of the fines. Plus the State Department audits of all their records and continuing surveillance of their business. So their misadventures likely cost them over a million dollars....

They sure didn't make much profit on those scopes.....

Very interesting and thanks for the detailed info - the guy I spoke to sure didn't give any details but he was MAJORLY PO'd and didn't seem to "like Canadians" that much even though we were not to blame for their demise...

Most Americans figures it's our Government that causes them all the shipping headaches when in fact our Government really only cares about collecting GST in most cases. It's the American Government that has all the crazy export rules. Getting them to understand that is often a challenge....lol

You can't blame US retailers for simply saying 'no'rather than risk heavy fines, especially when the canadian market is a fraction of the US market.Plus I doubt there is the political will on either side to drop these rediculous import export rules,no politician is going to risk the backlash from the left screaming about making it easier for Armed insurrection.....
Plus, you think it's bad NOW ,just wait for Justin Trudeau to get in....and don't say it can't happen, look what happened in Australia ....to buy even any firearm, you have to prove you have a place to shoot it,and a reason to.....
