I want to ask here because you guys know more than any government website can tell me.

What kind of game is huntable in Canada?

I got a friend away at University in an area with a lot of hunting. So we were going to go hunting with a few guys. I am the only one with a PAL though, and was looking into getting a hunting rifle, most likely a 30-06 from what I have read.

What process do i need to go through to get said hunting licence? Also if I were to take my shotgun, where would I get one of thoe "magazine plugs" ? Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

In BC these are the steps:

1. Take your CORE course, basically a hunter-safety course.

2. Take your results to a government agent office, and you get a hunter NUMBER card, which is good for life in BC.

3. Now you can buy a hunting license, and tags for any game for which you'd like to hunt.

4. You can now hunt any game for which there is an open season, described within the BC hunting synopsis, available from the government agent or any hunting store.

You options in BC are:
-Black Bear
-Mule Deer
-Black Tailed Deer
-White Tailed Deer
-Moose
-Caribou
-Rocky Mtn Elk
-Roosevelt Elk
-California Bighorn sheep
-Rocky Mountain Bighorns
-Stone Sheep
-Dall Sheep
-Mountain Goat
-Grizzly Bear
-Wolf
-Cougar

The most Common game birds are:
-Grouse
-Ducks
-Geese

Small Game/Varmints:
-Coyote
-Wolverine
-Lynx
-Bobcat
-Ground Squirrels

etc...I'm sure I forgot stuff

IN BC there are open season on all of the above in some area of the province except Grizzly Bear, Roosevelt Elk, and Dall sheep for which you must enter a draw.
~edit: forgot the Bison, biggest game animal, available on through the draw as well

Your friends, if they want to hunt with you, will have to go through the process for getting a license as well.

As far as the plug, you will not need one if hunting big game in BC, but beware, not all big game can be hunted with a shotgun. Consult the synopsis for information. If hunting fowl, you can use a wooden dowel of appropriate diameter cut to the right length for a plug.

Installing a plug into a shot gun I found to be a good introduction to gunsmithing. 1. Fill the tube with the shortest shells your gun will take. 2. Remove them and measure the total length of all the shells that fit minus two shells, this will give you the approximate length of plug. 3. Cut a round wooden plug no bigger in diameter than the shells, to this length. 4. Remove the end of the tube magazine. 5. Install in the tube. If in doubt consult your local gunsmith.

What about a rifled slug gun? :D

Used for hunting big game, so no plug needed. Rules pertaining to which game can be hunted with a shotgun still apply...
