Ok CGN! I need help!
I,ve been racking my brain over this for weeks! i recently sold my old mossberg in 30-06(my deer gun) and hoped to sell my stevens in 22-250(my dog slayer) so i could afford a good 243(an everything gun). i hunt predators(mostly coyotes) nearly everyday, and theres only a month to hunt deer with a rifle. November is generaly the most crowded time to hunt deer. and so i dont do much of it. In the interest of saving pelts (id like to kill some foxes and badgers) and shooting a light recoiled gun; should i stick to my original plan(243) or buy back my deer gun and trade the dog slayer for a 223? I just dont see the point of keeping guns you dont shoot(buying ammo gets expensive on a poor soldiers salary). and id like get used to shooting everything with the same gun........ i dunno? im sure im making this harder on myself than need be!.......... guess im just a hardcore predator!

Lets hear it yall!!!!

You're going to find it tough to find a compromise I think. A rifle that is going to be reliable enough to put down deer sized game is going to be overly powerful (assuming that you want to keep the hide) on coyote or smaller sized game. I've shot a few foxes with my 222, and even a milder round like that can blow the crap out of a fox. If you want a rifle that is going to be easy on fur, but still want to be able to hunt deer, I think you're better off getting two rifles.

Methinks you had an everything gun in that 30-06. :D

The old saying is "jack of all trades, master of none." The tool (or person) that is for only one purpose can always be specialised or optimised to do that one thing better than the thing that must serve two or more purposes. But only you can decide if a .243 does both things well enough for your needs. Try it and see. If it doesn't work out, you only face the not altogether unpleasant chore of shopping for two more guns to replace it.

wellif you have to only have one gun I guess you could make do with a 243 but then you have 1 gun that does nothing very well.

you could go with a switch barrel on your stevens, with the bolt head and action lenght you have it would be no problems throwing on a 243, 250-3000, 260, 7-08, 308, barrel (I bet I missed a whole bunch more) you just need a barrel and a savage barrel wrench.

But really just go and buy a deer gun, get another stevens in 25-06 and your good to go.

I feel your pain, but starting 3 different threads on the same subject isn't the answer...;)

Buy the .308 I PM'd you, keep the .22-250, done.

sorry to annoy u with the question blargon! im just indicisive and wanna get it right! ill figure it out!

You're not as annoying as some others.:D

Around here, a lot of guys chase their tails all day. Many calibers will do anything you need. I quit going in circles and bought a .22-250, a .308, and a .338WM. Covers everything I'll ever hunt, and there is no gap.:)

Good Luck!

Okay I just figured it out. Seams the problem is not the rifle or the caliber..This man is married and the wife sees no use for more then one rifle in the house. Dude, you really need to take her to home depot and show her how a multi bit screw driver comes with seven bits, you can't fix everything in the house with just a slotted screw driver now can you...they all serve a purpose. Now lesson number two, gun cabinets hold multiple guns, like the handle of the multi bit screw driver, because you can't hunt all animals big and small with just one. Heaven forbid the day use ask for a shotgun, but I guess if your wing shooting ducks in Wainwright with a .243 I should be okay out in western BC.

Find a reasonably priced 308 and keep the 22-250 or get a 223. Takes all the worry out of it. On the EE there are lots of deals so price is not really an issue either. If you cant find cheap ammo for the 308 and 223 you are just not trying.
Then roll yer own.
