Going for a new NR black rifle and would like some opinions

Hello im looking at buying a new NR black rifle in .223 /5.56 I'm stuck between 2 the maple ridge armoury renegade and the Kodiak defence wk180c. Im looking to see what ppls opinions are on the 2 rifles other then the obvious straight pull vs semi auto. I've held the wk its nice rifle i haven't held the renegade but it looks like i nicer rifle from the pics and the youtube videos. If you have any experience with either i would like to hear it pros and cons.

Semi all day in my view. Having a pump or straight pull is like buying a muscle car with a tiny motor..... looks the part till ya step on it and goooo...that's it? hahaha but hey, there are not many reasonably priced semi-autos in Canada that are available. Personally, I would go for the MCR if you could find one... or even a T81, or SKS if you wanna kick it old school...to bad the SKS is so expensive now, just like everything else over the past 2 years of covid hell.

Anyways, buying a new gun is supposed to be exciting and fun, don't stress to much, and find something you like. Often at my range, guys are keen to show and tell their rifles... maybe trying and scout a few out at the local range and talk to guys who own the firearms in question... hear about issues, or quirks and then choose once you have a feel....or just impulse buy at 2:00am because you finally found one in stock....Hope you land on something fun and enjoyable.

I have both...

Unlike what some others have reported, my WK has been wonderfully reliable, after 1700 rounds so far. Cleaning it is easy and I keep saying I am going to install that bolt catch/lock/release from TNA but I keep forgetting to do it. It is very accurate out of the box, I have a Lantac Dragon muzzle brake on it, have a Sig Romeo 5 red dot, and my only complaint with it is that the charging handle seems to come loose periodically and I have to tighten it again. My charging handle is not the recently improved HT one. But so far, no issues with the handle shearing off or pistol break (knock on wood). Semi auto is great on that thing. Feeds all mags with no problems - PMAG, LAR15, etc.

The MRA Renegade - great rifle, AMAZING ergonomics - look and feel, and great weight. I currently have it on RMA right now with MRA because of ONE issue that has plagued it since I bought it in July - the rifle will not full seat full mags (5 round pinned PMAGS whether G2 or G3) on a closed bolt. Same with LAR15 mags (10 rounds) - the mag will not seat on a closed bolt no matter how violently I shove it. The PMAG will seat with 3-4 rounds, and the LAR 15 only seats comfortably with 8 rounds or less. I have just been ignoring this but it has gotten to the point where I had to right MRA about it. It is being sent back for repairs, etc. As for straight pull - my opinion is, I would take a semi auto every time. It is better than a traditional bolt action, but I have never gotten used to it (yet). Further, the MRA also does not have a bolt catch/lock/release (at least my MK1 doesn't - the MK2 does). I should mention the Renegade has much more limited optics rail space than the WK.

Between the two rifles, in my opinion, based on bench rest shooting, the WK180 is significantly more accurate. And I would say because of the semi-auto, I enjoy shooting it much more. I already have it packed for my range trip tomorrow after church.
 
Wk owner here and over 10,000 rounds in I am a happy chappy.

That being said I think you'd also be happy with an MCR.

Don't buy a renegade it's not semi and you'll limit yourself so much by choosing non-semi

I would concur with this assessment. The only reason why I considered the Renegade aside from the fact it was on sale and made in Canada, is the fact that multiple people said if you ever want to have the closest feel to an AR, the Renegade is it, despite the fact that it is not a semi auto. I have never shot or even held an AR, so my curiosity got the better of me. Aside from the current RMA situation with mine, I have enjoyed shooting it mostly due to the ergonomics. If I had owned an AR, I may have already gotten my jollies already from it wouldn't need to experience a substitute to sort of gain a comparable experience.
 
Bought 2 X WK when they came out, both had the recall, both have in excess of 2K rounds each with a handfull of stoppage on each, this is almost nothing with all the cheap ammo those rifle digest
 
t97 is far superior and much more reliable than either for about the same price, if you don't like bullpups then a sl8 or a benelli mr1 are solid. X95 is pretty good if you want to spend that much.
 
Of the current offerings, I would say go with the MCR, especially if you plan to throw on the new Spec180 lower. If you are willing to wait a few more months we should have a couple more options on the table (Jard 180, NDS 18SC, R18mk2 etc.)

While the straight pull is an interesting concept, i dont see much point in going the .223 route right now considering we still have a handful of 180 semi auto options available to us. The Maverick on the other hand presents a better case considering the semi auto .308 class has effectively been erased with the exception of a few cost prohibitive options.
 
I have 3 WS-MCR rifles with high volume round counts. Other than one broken firing pin they have been very reliable. I love how they stay so much cleaner than an AR15. I love the recoil impulse and the accuracy compared to an AR15. The new lowers (and maybe uppers soon?) make them even more appealing. I actually mentioned the other day that if the CPC had won the election and the OIC was lifted I would sell most of my AR15's and concentrate on the MCR platform, I like them that much. Although part of that is simply due to the NR status.

The best reason for the straight pull rifles is to make something unique, like a short barrel stalking or truck rifle. Like this one in 6.5 Grendel with a 12.5" barrel. (The optic on it was just for load development, it usually wears a 1-6 LPVO. )

Thats one reason why i like the straight pull making a little scout rifle with a 12.5" barrel in like 300 blackout would be sweet!
