Going on Safari

I shoudl have said they START at 35K, Riley.

You can EASILY spend $60-$100K Canadian on a elephant hunt, depending on duration, quality of animal desired, where you are hunting, governemtn fees, trophy fees, daily rate, airfare, if you want to takea buffalo and plainsgame, etc.

When you book your elephant hunt, lets us know how much you paid for it.;)
i included everything from trophy fees to hotels but that is only with that outfit and that is in US$ so i see your point.:)
talk to ya all later

Sounds like quite an adventure, especcially since BBC news ran a report last week quoting a government official in Chad as saying his country is in a state of war with Sudan.(www.news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa). I'd also have a close, critical look at the legalities before going on a hunt in Sudan. These are apparently serious for Americans, don't know what they are like for Canadians. You'd want to be certain of what CITES says about the animals you may hunt and what the Canadian regs are too. You might want to ask around on the AR African forums (www.accuratereloading.com) for current conditions. If I was sure about the legal stuff, I'd do it in a heart beat. But only if I was sure.

As for guns.... If you are concentrating on birds, you might want to forgo the rifle entirely and rent/borrow a rifle in Sudan. Airlines only allow 5 kg of ammo per passenger and I suspect, but don't know, that it would be easier to get a rifle and ammo in Sudan than to get a shotgun and shells. If you do take a rifle, I'd only take one in your situation (ie already taking a shotgun and shells). If buff are on the menu, and maybe an ele, I'd take a .375 H&H with a box or two of solids, a few boxes of softs, and use it on everything. That is after all what the .375 H&H is good at. If no DG is on the menu, I wouldn't bother with a heavy rifle, but would take any deer/elk/moose gun you'd be happy taking out west. You really don't what to get into a position where you have to shoot something in self defense. I'd rather take my chances outrunning a startled cow elephant than shoot her off license and take my chances with an African justice system. As a foreigner, you'll almost certainly be legally required to hunt with a PH. It's his job to sort out such problems, which are unlikely anyway. Shooting a buff or an ele with a shotgun slug will just piss it off and focus its attention on you.

All the best with your adventure!

Looking forward to pics. What model Ruger did you pick up? If they're hunting with Kalishnakovs, maybe a mini-30 would work?

I have both the 20 g and 12g. The 12 does not have sights. I have not taken it out of the box yet. I will have to this week though
