I'm going to look at a Remington 870 tomorrow and I'm looking for some input for things to look for and check. So far all I know is it holds 4 shells. The seller is selling it for his mom who inherited from their dad so information is minimal but it could turn out to be one of those rare finds or a project at the least.

Determine if it's a Wingmaster or Express model.
It sounds like it can be a Wingmaster.
Determine if it's a 2.75 or 3'' model. Look for wear on the mag tube to indicate use. Check for rust, pitting.
flexitab or chromed shell lifter
check bore condition, look for home gunsmithing
if they are walnut stocks, check for cracks, gouges, scratches
recoil pad condition
bluing wear etc.
870s generally work, so just make sure that it functions properly and is safe (check safety works, action release works, pump cycles without binding etc.)
