Just a little question regarding laser rangefinders. I am looking for a rangefinder to range from 10 - 100 yards. This is to set up targets at the pits I would shoot at a couple of times a year, and possibly shooting my pellet rifle at the cottage (10 yards). Anyways, the majority of the use of the couple times I would go shooting would be to range 30, 50, and 100 yards. Would a laser golf rangefinder work for this, or do I need to invest in a hunting type rangefinder? I do have an add out on the EE looking for an older rangefinder, but was just wondering if I would get away with a cheap golf unit. Thanks.

Buy one from a golf store and try it out .
If it doesnt work return it....
Probably not the most ethical of uses for a return policy...

Better to keep an eye on the EE for a used one that someone is up grading ...
Air rifle and a good pair of boots can pace off 25 yrds and 50 yrds rather quickly when it comes to shooting paper targets.
Plus it will give you practice for real world judgment of distance and trajectory.

Why not just buy a 100m fish tape? Princess auto sells them for like $30.

Alternatively, you could get one of those measuring wheels, I picked one up for under $10 at Summit tools a little while ago.

Hmmm. Thanks for the alternative tips. I had not thought of a 100m Tape, or even better the wheel. I will keep an eye on Princess Auto. That may be the best alternative.

That's what I would do if it was just for setting up some impromptu targets now and then, always nice to have a big fish tape around for other things as well.

That said you could always get a range finder, I have a Nikon and I like to take it with me hiking etc. It's a good way to test your internal range guessing abilities, works well way past my normal shooting ranges. There's are a couple decent lower priced range finders out there that won't break the bank and can range well out past 600yds, Nikon and Sig being two of them.

Golf range finders don't work as well on animals at their specified max ranges because of the non reflective nature of animals as compared to flag material.

A golf range finder will do fine for targets at those ranges.

A laser range finder at a golf store is likely the excact same as in a hunting store.. just missing the camo.
They do have those cheapo golf “range finders” that are simply marker pins inside a glass tube.

Just talked to my dad and he has a 30M long tape I can use. So, I will just keep my eyes open for a cheap used rangefinder on teh EE or locally.

Crappy tire starts blowing out their hunting stuff to make way for fishing tackle and the like, pretty soon after Christmas. They usually have a couple Bushnell or Nikon around.

Or you can drop a few hints that one makes a swell gift idea, eh?

A hundred and chump change buys a lot better basic range finder now than it did a bunch of years back. And prices are way down on some pretty good used stuff too. I hooked up onto a Leica 800 for a couple hundred bucks a fair few years ago, really still very happy with it. Saw a CRF1200 Scan on the EE for what seemed pretty good price lately too.

As the other guys say, a laser range finder is a laser range finder. If the money just isn't there, a spool of construction string line is a couple bucks, a knot, and a tape flag marked with the distance in easy increments, still gives you accurate distances for stuff that you are walking back and forth for anyways. Seems pretty ghetto, but worked for the ##### and Inca builders, worked for about every construction site since, too.

(Was there a reason the word that looks more or less like Azz-tech sounds, is on the censored list?)

I would draw you attention to the two sub-$100 rangefinders the username jharriot has in the optics EE right now, as well as the slightly more expensive but unused units from jimmyjazz. Just sayin.

Crappy tire had their cheap bushnell one on sale a couple years back for $75 so I grabbed one.

I love the thing. I use it golfing, hunting, target shooting, archery, and even for special events at work trying to space out pylons or crowd fencing. My only complaint is that I can’t remember if I left it in my golf bag, or my hunting bag, or my archery bag, or my...

#####. #####. Testing 1-2-3. #####.

Hmm. Now that you mention it, I seem to recall there being some hullabaloo years ago about this... I’m sure others would recall better than I... I believe the was a company called azztek firearms that burned CGN admin, and kept coming back under new usernames to chirp off, so admin took this step to dial back the trolling... that’s how I recall it, but don’t quote me.
