Looking for a good Rifle rest(s) for sighting and load development at the range and holding a rifle for scope mounting, cleaning etc. I thought a double duty setup might be good value, at least for starts. I'm looking at Cabelas' Premier Rifle rest, "sorry I can't seem to post the link".

Any CGN thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanx

I am using the older version of this, good for cleaning

Link sent via PM as I can't shut it off

I'm not sure that you will find one for dual purposes that will be satisfactory.

I would suggest that you Not combine the two functions. You can build a pretty decent rest with basic metalworking skills if you have access to a welder and a drill press. They cost $100 or less for a "starter" level. The bags cost near as much as the actual rests.

The problem that I have with firing from a clamp type rifle holder is that you do not have very much control of the rifle, which may be okay for the most basic sighting in, but would get stale pretty fast!

As for the cleaning end, the best tool to buy when going past the very basics is likely a bore guide to fit the breech of your rifle.

I did the same thing (combined functions). Bad plan, IMO, I ended up going with one rest (MTM) for cleaning/work, another for actual shooting work.

Been using the Caldwell "ROCK" front rest for years. Works very well and not that expensive. Get a good quality bag like those made by protecktor. The fit and stability is critical to accurate shooting.

Also, invest in a quality rear bag. It is amazing how much groups will shrink when good rests and proper shooting technique is used.

I use these rests during the cleaning stage too. Holds the rifle just fine.
