Good Barrel Maker?

There are lots of good barrel makers. Your budget will decide more than anything else. Whether they make barrels for Rugers is another thing.

Ted Gaillard makes a good barrel and is Canadian, he's in St. Brieux (sp?) Sk. I've used several of his barrels and all were very good , but of course who you get to fit and chamber it has at least as much effect on the outcome as the barrel.

You don't really have barrels made for your rifle, the barrel maker makes blanks that then require chambering, threading and fitting to your action, usually done by a gunsmith.

You also don't want just a good barrel maker, you want a great barrel maker... and there are many match grade barrel makers out there. Ted Gaillard is one of them. I have installed hundreds of them. He makes only match grade barrels in stainless steel. I believe a contoured blank from him will run you about $440 mailed. Many smiths will charge from $250 and up to complete the job for you. It just depends on inletting the barrel, bedding, barrel finish, etc.

I don't know of any good makers. But there are a number of excellent makers:

Shilen
Mclellan (Can.)
Lija
Kreiger
Gailllard (can)
Smith (Can)
Broughton

The maker will supply a barrel of the contour, length and caliber you want. Your gunsmith cuts the threads so it can be screwed on and reams out a chamber for the cartridge you want.

I don't think Ron Smith makes 270 barrels. He didn't when I wanted one. Some people have something against the 270.

Having a barrel made for a stock hunting rifle will cost a fortune. In any case, smithies rarely make 'em from scratch. That costs a fortune too. Nearly all smithies(not the people of the lists above) buy barrel blanks and just do the chambering etc. Your budget still matters. As does remembering that it can take a year to get done.

I guess I should have asked for a great gunsmith who makes and finishes barrels if there is such a thing? The Gunsmith I used to use did both at one time but is no longer smithing, sadly.

That's the same question. Are you looking for someone who drills, reams, rifles and contours barrels? Or are you looking for a guy that threads, chambers, headspaces and fits barrels? Or, are you looking for someone that fills both roles?

Ron Smith, does make 270's and has made many! He also installs on Ruger No1's so he might be your choice.
I've spent a lot of time in that shop over the years and I know he makes sweet barrels, even one for me out of rebar......
Give him a call and mention you like scotch.... 1-403-631-2405 ...... you'll be happy he is an artist

I have three Ron Smith barrels and all shoot very very well. He raised his prices recently but they are still a good deal.
He will do anything you need including gain twist if that interests you.
