I will be reloading for next year this summer is load developement (just not enough time for this stuff it seems) Iam looking for a good .223 ammo availiable by the case so me and the old lady can just go out and shoot. It can't be FMJ and has to have decent brass for reloading.

So far I have found
50gr American eagle FBHP
Privi Partisan (sp?) 55gr SP

Any others? Would like to spend no more than $500 for the case Is this possible with today's prices?

for the gopher fields out of a bolt rifle is the reason for not going fmj if I was feeding an AR I would be all over the PMC or sellier and bellot

Maybe an odd place to find ammunition, but I checked out my old lieutenant's military surplus shop in Calgary and noticed he was selling a bunch of ammo from Bosnia. He's got 55gr SP .223 on for $250/500rnds. I haven't had a chance to test it yet.

Like many others on here I jumped the gun a little, and bought a bunch of ammo and magazines for my expected arrival of the Type-97... Now I have boxes full of Bosnian .223 ammo for which I don't have a rifle.

Here's the link to his site: http://www.thingsmilitary.com/products/Igman_Cartridges_222_Rem_500_rds-425-35.html

If the Type-97 gets re-classified I may just sell what I bought from him on the EE, or maybe save up and get in line for a Robinson Arms XCR.

If I run out I might have to try it but I ended up just buying a bunch of the american eagle at an inflated price but hey I saved shipping

Let me know how it is if you try any out.

I don't get your reasons for not using FMJ ? You're shooting gophers with a bolt rifle what's the problem with that?

Someone please explain since I own both a .223 bolt rifle and lots of FMJ ammo.

Some of the farmers frown on fmj around here as well as not sure for gopher shooting but I know fmj are not leagally allowed for hunting in my province. Plus I like the acrobatics of the hollow point :D

Which province is that?

As far as I understood it was more about humane kills in big game and not about projectile carry.

Also, I did not think that gophers counted as hunting, more like target practice since you need no license.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this. I'm in Alberta.

Your not.

Varmint bullets are frangible, and aren't as suseptible to richocette. Also, the impact aerobatics are friggin awesome.

Saskatchewan is where I am I don't know if it applies to gophers. I know it applies to big game for sure. I don't use them on gophers due to farmer request and the splat factor never looked into the leagal part of it.

So, if I understood you, it's ok to shoot coyotes and gophers with FMJ in Alberta or elsewhere?

I have never seen anything to the contrary.

I only know about Alberta. You can't hunt big game with FMJ. Gophers and coyotes don't fall into that category.

Note the Big game prohibitions section.

Non expanding bullets are prohibited for big game (cougar /bear / moose / elk / deer). All the critters that you need to purchase a license for, subject to a minimum calibre restriction, and compelled by law not to allow to spoil or waste either the pelt or meat.

I wouldn't use a FMJ for coyote (ethics) but some folks do stating it limits pelt damage. You can shoot coyotes, but you can also leave'm to rot where they fall.

You don't think a clean hit with a .223 FMJ can clean kill a yote?

Is this from experience or estimation?

I'm going to go yote shooting this year and I have a whole lot of FMJ to burn through.

Anyone else want to weight in?
