good bullet choice for marlin guide gun?

1) What would beyour first bullet choice for hunting with a marlin guide gun?
Moose and deer is the plan.
Since I am not a fan of recoil I will keep the velocity down a bit from max.

I have some 405 gr cast bullets purchaced from BDX.
I am suprised how accurate they are.

2) Would 405 gr cast bullets be acceptable for certian hunting conditions.
Like short range (ie treestand deer)?

They would be acceptable for anything in North America that you would want to point your rifle at.
 
It should do well. I haven't shot anything with mine, yet, but a chunk of lead that size is going to make a Deer or Moose seriously ill. I get some cast 325gr & 420gr GC bullets from a guy locally that wok well accuracy wise. With jacketed, my best results to date have been with the Speer 400grFN, followed closely by the performance of the Hornady 350gr FP interlock. Crazydavey has sent me some 405gr Remington's to try so thats next on my list.
 
12 years ago I had the bright Idea I wanted to shoot saboted hard cast bullets from a muzzle loader.

I checked with a fish cop to see if hard casts were legal. He returned my call a few days later and said it was not.

People do it but I don't know if it realy legal here or not.
 
45-70

I believe any heavy 45-70 slug that makes its way into a moose or bear is going to cause a lethal case of lead poisoning.:shotgun: My Marlin GS likes the 420 grain gas checked cast that I can get locally. They chronied 1635 fps out of the Marlin's 18.5 inch tube. I would be confident to pack this little rifle into Yogi's kitchen anyday...........:evil:
 
405 gr cast bullets purchaced from BDX

I assume:

1) 405 gr cast bullets purchaced from BDX would pass through the lungs of a moose without mushrooming. Not a bad thing. Quite devistating on a shoulder shot moose or black bear.


2) the Hornady 350gr FP interlock or some of the other bullets mentioned would mushroom and be very deadly, lungs or shoulders.

Would the difference in recoil from 350 gr to 405 gr be noticable?

I shoot the Hornady 350 grain SP @ 2050 fps out of my 22" 1895SS. The recoil does catch your attention. :rolleyes: The "felt" recoil is more that what I get shooting 405 grain cast bullets @ 1600 fps
 
The 480gr. Wide flat nose gas check, hard cast bullets from M.T. Chambers will handle anything, anywhere, at 1900fps. some might not handle the recoil.
