Hey CGN,

I posted this as a comment in an old thread but I figured I would just make a thread for it.

I shoot an M1A with National Match irons/barrel and I only use irons at the moment (but will be scoped soon enough)...out to 200 yards.

*** Getting .308 brass is nice but I already have close to 400 once fired cases of it...and getting set up for and reloading it still 6+ months away for me so its not a BIG concern/need at the moment. ***

SO...

I can get 500 rounds of Chinese 7.62x51 for $300 + taxes

OR

500 rounds of Barnaul for $375 + taxes

OR

480 rounds of Hirtenberger for $400 + taxes

---

What ammo would you guys choose?

Is one significantly better ie. more accurate then the others?

Thanks!

The Barnaul and the cheap Chinese... well your rifle will work with it, but that's pretty cheap ammo for such a nice rifle, steel jacketed and all...

This is why I say hirtenberger be your best choice. Brass and copper, the way it oughta be for a NM M1A

Stick with the copper & brass. The Chinese stuff is quite good, but I wouldn't shoot much of it in a non-chromed match chamber. I wouldn't even shoot Barnaul out of a rental gun.

Thanks for the votes...hitzy sounds like it is the best, will look into ordering a single battle pack to start.

Just curious as to why the hate/fear of steel cased/barnual ammo? Wouldn't the Chinese stuff be in the same class or?

Steel jacket bullets in these as well, low grade gilding metal, steel can give you head separations where brass will stretch and hold together, not the best for an expensive gun to be digesting.

Even soft steel is harder than copper and brass. The Chinese stuff is steel-cased, steel-jacketed, and well-made. The Barnaul is steel-cased, steel-jacketed, and utter sh*t.

What about PMC? i've seen that available for 400 per 500. any reports on it? so far the only one i have found that is brass case w non steel FMJ bullet.
i'm getting into the battle rifle world and the composition has become as big an issue as cost, particularly
if you need to comply with a 'no steel' 'magnet sticky' rule range.. it knocks out many milsurp brands.
can some of the experts chime in on confirmed non-magnetic cartridges sold in bulk?

Are you able u use the norinco ammo in NM? The chamber is tight. For a 3k rifle. Should feed good ammo for it :). PMC and Hirts ammo are good

I'd go with the pmc in a nice rifle before the decent quality but a lot of steel Chineseium, and the Barnaul is simply rough crappy ammo.

My concern with the steel jackets is more brutal wear on a nice barrel, and the barnaul brings a bit of a poor history. Again, that mm m1a is nice gun.

My m14s really likes the Norinco stuff, imho it must be consistent stuff, if cheaper. If the barnaul is what I'm thinking, it's dirty and leaves lots of crap in the action. And it's all steel. I think I see more mouth splits with it than norinco.

You've got a nice rifle, feed it the good stuff!
