I've recently joined the forum,

In March of 2008 I received my PAL (w/ restricted) since receiving it, I have gone out and purchased the following:

Remington 870 Super Magnum
Remington 597 SS
Henry Golden Boy 22

Really enjoy going up north to the back 40 and doing some plinking or poppin' clay pigeons. Since getting my PAL, several others I work with have either received theirs or are in the process of getting theirs and I work down in the heart of TO.

I'm looking into purchasing my first handgun soon, so I can begin pistol shooting.

Question to the members of the forum?

In Ontario do you have to be a member of gun club (range) before buying a handgun? I'm looking to buy one first, then join a club.

Good to see more of TO's fine citizens picking up on the sport.
As for your question: technically, no, you do not need to join a club first. That said, you will probably find the process a lot easier if you do. Otherwise, when you do purchase, you will need to claim you are a collector, and Big Brother frowns on collectors.
Take the time to check out the clubs in your area, or at least within your comfort zone for driving regularly. The firearms will still be there, but it's very important to find a club you will like and want to go to.
