Well... while I was at the Orangeville gunshow I noticed a Longbranch Lee Enfield stamped 1950 with good wood, a bore and bolt that look like they have little wear and matching serial # on the bolt and ring...

$300.

Did I pay too much or get a deal?

And... being as it looks rather newish... should I put it away or should I take it to the range?

I'd say neither. If it isn't in unfired or at least overall excellent, shoot the darn thing.

Good Deal

I think it is reasonable price. If you don't want to shoot it I will trade a Long Branch, or other shooter for it. It probably has C No4 on it, they were well built guns.

I spoke with Bob briefly... mainly about the various incarnations of the longbranch (apparently he has a 41', 42', '43', '44, etc.) but the only ones he had were more than I was willing to spend (ie. $600 target model used at bisley... one converted to .308... etc.) I'm not at the point that I need to be buying odd variants... I figure it appropriate to buy a regular un-freakified rifle in .303 as my first Longbranch... he did have a later-year Savage he was selling for $275 but I want a piece of Canadian - not US - history.

As you walked in to the show - virtually opposite the door - were a couple of old guys with a single enfield and a couple of lever rifles... none with prices. I asked the old man if he was selling the longbranch or just teasing people and we cut a deal from there.

Funny thing is in the time it took me to buy the rifle and walk over to the guy selling cheap socks so I could wrap it and put it in the trunk 5 people asked me if I was selling it...

My ATT is getting cancelled and then re-issued since I'm moving clubs... which means the Enfield is the only non-restricted I now have.

So it well may be making its way to the range.

The bore looks beautiful... and while I was told the surplus .303 I bought some time ago isn't corrosive I would prefer to play it safe.

What's the best way to clean after shooting corrosive ammo? I have a box labelled BALL B1 M3Z A09/81 and the bullets are labelled A91 7.7 R1 M3Z.... corrosive? Dangerous?

I saw you Longbranch. Nice rifle. If I had the cash I probably would have bought it. The guy with the 7.62x39 Enfield wanted $600.

So easy that even a grunt can do it. :D

Get a tight fitting funnel (able to handle hot water) if you are going to pour hot water down the barrel, and consider taking the woodwork off before doing so until you get used to how things work...as you don't want to get water trapped between the woodwork, and the metal.

LOL, Yeah I always get a kick out of that guy. Looks like he nervous all the time,

I cant justify spending $600.00 on a backyard gunsmith project, Id rather buy 5 SKS rifles or another VZ

I think you did well.... be happy and enjoy her.... :D

I see you've already got a ton of advice about cleaning corrosive, so I won't jump in as well. I would only say that I make it a practice not to shoot any corrosive ammo in any of my collectibles. As claven2 will attest, I'm mechanically challenged and without the help of a lot of guys here, I'd probably stab myself with a screwdriver, or pour steaming hot water all over my body. :D

So, I just do basic pull-through cleaning on non-corrosive ammo and at that's it...... :)

Badger

How quickly they forget.... :D :D

Who had me ship that M24/47 to them for a clean-up, after I had issues with it?

Thanks partner..... :)
