jsut bought a new marlin 45/70.. I tried to find a 45/70 made by marlin and not remmington marlin but gave up and bought a new one. Anyways, bought some 300 gr federal ammo for it. It doesn't feed well. Every 2nd or 3rd shot I have to really push the lever hard to feed it into the breech. Anyone have a new 45/70 and found ammo that feeds good?

I have a 45-70 Marlin 1895GS and the jacketed bullets that work well for me are the 400gr Speer and the 405gr Remington. Stay under the suggested C.O A.L. and you shouldn't have a problem.

I just bought a new one and it feeds the federal fusion 300gr very well, I also bought a box of Hornady leverevolution to try as well and the seem to load pretty well also.

I've found that most need the extractor to be loosened a bit or spaced out from the bolt body to allow for perfect feeding.

Yeah, what The Kurgan said.....if it's a Remlin I would suspect it's the gun with issues, not the ammo.....

the problem with mine is that it ejects fine, but when the next cartridge comes up and the bolt tries to push it into the chamber, the nose of the bullet gets stuck while it slides up the ramp.. I did find when I cycled it hard and fast it was ok.

Yep....been there.....believe me, it's worth the extra cash to ship it to Gravel Agency and have them check it over for ya....it took me almost a year to sort this ####e out but I'm happy with mine now
how long did it take to get the gun back? I am not ready to send it away for a few weeks. It is too much fun to shoot. I am probably going to buy some cheap fruit and shoot it up in the next few days.
Can't wait until Nov 1st when there is hundreds of pumpkins free for the taking

Well, I'm glad you're enjoying the gun....it's certainly an interesting cartridge with lots of options and potential if you're a reloader....
My original purchase was so messed up, I sent it to Gravel for warranty work and they couldn't fix it, it was to be replaced with another gun....which I was told would take up to 6 months because of back-orders or some such BS related to the Marlin take-over. When I did receive my replacement, it had feeding issues exactly as you describe and so off to Gravel it goes.....I got the gun back and it now functions like an ole Marlin should, but I'm still not pleased with the fit of the stock, there's gaps all over the place.....I'm content with a gun that now goes bang, but based one this one experience I will never purchase another firearm unless I can personally and visually inspect it first....or it's about 30 years old or more

TRUST ME. I've been there; its likely your extractor. Its not the ammo. After a two week turnaround to/from Gravel Agency (excellent customer service), my 1895 feeds EVERYTHING I throw in it. Its a known problem. Just read the thread. An easy fix on an otherwise brilliant rifle.

I read the entire thread... sounds like I need a new extractor.. I wonder if its faster and cheaper to get a local smith to replace than to pay shipping and wait a few weeks to get it back..
I did give the gun a really good inspection at the shop before buying however they wouldn't let me try some snap caps in it before buying. Mine has a tiny gap in the buttstock where it meets the metal near the hammer.. other than that and the feeding problem I think its mint. Oh wait, I forgot- I have never had metal edges so sharpe on a gun before. wow, the hole to feed the shells in to the tube is like knife sharpe and the lever itself is so sharpe I wrappped some painters tape around it so it doesn't make my fingers raw from cycling it. I think I will add that to the replace the extractor when i take it to the smith...
I want everyone to know although there are some flaws I REALLY like the gun. Very fun to shoot.

Personally, I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to replace an ejector, but Gravel is very familiar with this model(!!) and I would trust in their easy access to the required parts and their ability to do a clean job. Yes, it sucks to have to pay postage.
A spare ejector is good to have in your bag on a hunting trp. I replaced mine with a Wild West ejector but keep the spare with my hunting gear.
BTW the WW Happy trigger is a great upgrade, makes the trigger pull very light and crisp.

Agreed, mine which was one the last ones before they turned to crap seems to feed mostly everything from jacket to hollowpoint, soft point, semis, levers all no problem. Good luck on getting it fixed, when working well its a nice rifle.
