Good first Trap gun

Hi everyone,

I have recently got into shooting trap. I currently use my Remington 870 express from the box. What improvements can I make to the gun to make it better for shooting trap? After 50 rounds my shoulder starts to really hurt...haha. For the future...what type of gun should I look at for more competitive shooting?

Depends on how much you would like to spend.
Beretta and Browning both are very good choices

Nice guns, but spending $10,000 on a gun isn't going to make you competitive, and it certainly isn't necessary. I have seen many people with high dollar guns finish behind people shooting guns costing 1/4 as much.
 
I was recently in the same position, got shooting trap with some friends and enjoyed it but was not liking the feel of my 870. Although I shopped around for a good used Citori I eventually bought a Franchi SL over/under in 12 gauge. Paid $1000, it may not be a top of the line Browning or Benelli but so far I have really enjoyed shooting it. Btw I purchased it at Accuracy Plus in Peterborough, great shop and service
 
Personally I would recommend a nice pump. A nice bps pump would make a great trap gun. Heavy , reliable , can be found for 500 on the ee and can be used in the duck blind. A newbie should not be dropping 10k on a shotgun. Bps has dedicated pump trap gun. 750 plus tax.

When I first started shooting trap i wanted to fix up an old cooey single shot. 28" barrel full choke sounds good :) Solder on a high rib :)
 
get a Trap gun. Any Trap gun. Specifically for Trap, like a Beretta 390/391 with monte carlo stock. They come on EE often enough. They go for around 900-1200 depending condition.
I have one and will not sell it, one of the finest semi autos beretta has made. Mine is the sporting version. Cheers.
 
Nice things to have in a trap gun IMHO: weight, length of barrel(long sight plane),high comb and rib. A truly dedicated trap gun is a pretty specific beast.
However, fit,weight and load will be more important for felt recoil in non-semi auto shotguns. The nature of the clay game you want to play dictates the characteristics of the gun.
 
I started shooting trap with a Maverick 88 after a couple of years feeling slightly embarresed shooting beside guys running perazzis and high end berettas I bought a browning XT trap, as far as trap guns go its reasonably priced and I have to say it shoots great, now it didn't make me drop less targets but my shoulder feels just fine after a hundred rounds. The best thing as always is to shoulder a couple and see what's right for you.
 
Easy upgrade is a remington supercell recoil pad, just make sure it's the model for your synthetic express and not the wood version depending what you have. 30 dollar upgrade that will reduce felt recoil.
 
To answer your immediate concern, I agree with Noob ... a good quality recoil pad will help if the pain is in the shoulder. Your long term question will be determined by how much you want to shoot and how much money you have to budget for shooting clay targets. That will take you some time to determine. Shoot every gun you can lay your hands on.
 
I would go with a browning auto five with a 32" barrel. been using one for years. magnum's convert with the brass rings in the forend to use trap loads.
 
"...make it better for shooting trap..." Recoil reduction system and a trap barrel.
"...After 50 rounds..." What ammo are you using? Shot one round of skeet or trap, I forget which, with 2.5" magnums long ago. OUCH!!!! Target ammo exists.
"...Perazzi..." Last time I saw a price on one of those it was about 30 years ago. $15,000 US for a single shot.

Come on Man a Beretta dt10 :).

Unless you want to be World Champion and spend thousands trying to find the "perfect" Trap Gun.

Go out and find a quality Semi Auto Trap Gun that fits you well and just shoot the "Shyte" out of it. It's all anyone really needs for Trap.
 
Spend your money putting ammo through your 870 for a while. A fancy expensive trap gun is no replacement for rounds downrange. That being said, lots of good used trap guns show up in the EE for 500-1000.00. 1100`s, 1187`s and Browning Citoris come to mind.
 
Practice, target loads and a recoil pad for now.

The best trap gun is the one that fits YOU. There are so many variables (length of pull, comb height etc) that only trying others' guns would give you an idea of what you want... plus advice from guys like Jim at the club.

If you have to buy another gun right now, get a semi auto to cut the recoil.
