I am now in a position to buy a decent M1. Passed on a few last year when I didn't have the extra cash for yet another gun project. Now it seems there are a lot of not-so-good M1's going for more than the good ones last year. I saw one on the EE a while ago for $800 : cracked stock, entirely mismatched parts and poor bore. WTF? I hope the seller made a sale and got what he wanted. Good for him if he did but he wouldn't have gotten it from me.

Is a good one really that hard to find now? I understand supply and demand but for the love of Pete!!!!! Is there a good Garand out there to be had in a similar price range???

Regards,

Garands

O they are out there, good ones too! you just got to be on the bit when one comes up, they go fast and are going for a good buck, but you are started in the right place ( funds Ready) just hold out for the one you want and buy it! Cant be to picky because when you snooze you loose! Bought a Winchester Garand in November, she isn't all matching but it's a nice rifle:) Good Luck!

At last count, I now have 11 of them (how did that happen??) and I would say that 5 of them are real nice, one is rather poor, and the rest just ok. Just keep going to the gun shows, and sooner or later, what you're looking for "will" appear....

11

I was starting to feel like 3 might be "too many". Thanks for putting it into perspective ! :D

One was listed @ $1500 awhile back on EE. So how high can a Garand go? Seems the sky is the limit.

And we all thought $500 was already a ridicules price back in the 90's.

Yea, I can remember not long ago that I'd cringe when someone wanted more than $200 for a Garand. I think it's just a bit of a fad right now, and soon prices will start coming back down. When I was into Enfields not long ago, I seems prices for parts on Ebay were just nutso.... but lately, it seems they've dropped like a rock. Yea the NoT scopes are still pricey, but that's about it.

Matching #'s is not really that big a deal to me...more into wanting and shooting than collecting . As long as it is in decent shape. I used that particular example from the EE simply because for $800 it had nothing going for it: mismatched, banged up hard and poor bore. I know that Garands aren't cheap either. I am willing to pay for one but I do not want an $800 peice of scrap either. I simply want something decent that shoots fairly well.
I'll keep saving & shopping. Never know... might end up with a new one yet ;)

Regards,

"...Matching #'s..." No such thing. M-1 parts were never matching to the serial number. The numbers on the parts are drawing numbers and have nothing whatever to do with the serial number. You might find one with parts made by the same manufacturer, but if the part numbers match it's been faked. In all likelihood, matching manufacturer parts has been done by somebody with too much time and money too. Very few rifles remain that are have the original maker's parts. It's not an issue with M-1's anyway.
I've seen some real junkers at gun shows at $800ish. Some guys think all M-1's are worth big money. To find one in great condition you really need all the tools. TE guage, muzzle wear guage, etc.

If your in the vancouver area, an employee at Reliable Gun and Tackle has real nice one for $800.

I may have to call & try to get pics. As for being in the area..... not quite. About 4800 km's east of Vancouver. ;)

Thre are a couple at Collector's Source right now in the $800-900 range that are really nice. Given that this is the retail sales price range, I think anyone willing to pay mor than that in the CGN EE is just suffering from buyer's fever, desperation, and a lack of will to look around on the various dealers' websites.

I just replaced the M-1 I sold last year (much to my later regret!) Its a pre-war SA, with all SA parts and looks to be an original in VG condition. I paid a premium for it, but I figured since prices on these seem to be increasing by several hundred dollars each year for the past few years, I better get while the getting was good! I sold an M-1 last year, all SA, all 1945 production year for $600.00 that was in cherry condition. Saw M-1s for sale in the EE that were absolute crap compared to that one sell for $900+!!! WTF??? Guess we're witness to Supply & Demand in action. I don't think the "fad" is going to go away anytime soon, since Saving Private Ryan was released in 1998, and Band of Brothers in 2001. The WWII video games like Call of Duty, etc...remain very popular and that seems to be driving the popularity of the M-1 Garand, in combination with SPR & BOB....Get 'em while you can I guess! :)

In the US, CMP is the cheapest source of M1's. A field grade M1 (fair to good) sells for US$425.00 Collector grade (very good to excellent condition) goes for US$1400 - US$1800. Sales by individuals and stores push that price up considerably. So, Can$800 - 1000 for a decent M1 in Canada doesn't sound outrageous to me.
