Good place in/around Calgary to try skeet?

Red deer skeet and trap club shoots just south of Bowden, not far from the north side of calgary and the best prices for the facilities if you become a member. There are a few people driving from calgary now.

I've had good and mediocre experiences at the DeWinton AHEIA range. It's great if they get the impression that you know what you're doing. For new shooters that require a little more attention and instruction, patience seems to run out a little more quickly. Might have just been the people I was with, or maybe the RO was having a rough day, who knows.

They also seem to have issues with the machines and the charging system for doubles. I've paid for x number of clays and gotten only half on a number of occasions.

If the machine doesn't throw a target, or if it throws a broken target, the button is pushed until you are thrown the correct unbroken targets. Now if you are losing a dozen targets per round because you have the safety on or the barrel selector set wrong, or if you take seemingly forever to get ready at each station, the squad will likely get impatient.

The lack of targets was not due to user error or lack of skill on my part, it was a discrepancy between the number paid for vs the number registered on the readout at the station. I would pay for a round of doubles (essentially twice the price of a round of singles), and it would only register one round of targets. I gave it the benefit of the doubt the first time, and counted my targets; it threw the 25 (plus the 2 or 3 extra they give you), and stopped. My card then had no targets left on it.

To be fair to the AHEIA, they were extremely accommodating, and refunded the difference without question, which was greatly appreciated. The issue only seemed to happen on the doubles station.

I know you dont know me or my shooting abilities, but I assure you that the last half of what you said was not the case. There's no way I would fault the AHEIA if it were.

When you shoot doubles skeet, a round is still 25 targets, not 50 like in doubles trap. Usually we shoot 24 for the first round, and 26 the second round.

I was shooting trap, I guess I should have specified. I would like to try out skeet. Might not be good enough for sporting clays just yet, but I suppose there's only one way to find out.

Is there a club near red deer ? I am new and am now addicted to shooting clays. I've been to silver willows a few time even when it was raining lol

Yes, the Lone Pine Clay Target Club just off QE2 north of Olds. Skeet, trap and 5 Stand a few times a month.
