Hi all. I'm heading to Calgary tomorrow and plan on stopping in at Wholesale sports to pick up some reloading supplies. I'm new to loading for the .40 S&W,as I just recently bought it. I don't expect anyone to divulge their favorite loads, but what powder performs well in this cartridge. Any info would be appreciated.

Vihtavuori N320 is one of the top choice amongst 40SW shooters. They are hard to find in Canada and very expensive, I think Wholesales Sports carry VV powder. Not sure about VV N320 tho.

I use Titegroup & Win 231 in my practice rounds.
I have used Winchester Super Target - WST as well.

Good luck and reload safely. :)

VV is nice but for the average shooter not worth the cost and hard to find... Titegroup is readily available and a good powder for 40... 231 is very dirty in high pressure rounds it works best in the lower pressure calibers (38 and 45)

Thanks for the info guys. I have some 231 left over from my 38 & 357 days. Is there a website where I can get some reloading data. I have three different manuals and none of them have .40 data. A small pamphlet with powder and bullet combinations came with the Lee dies that I bought, I'm just not sure if I should trust the info.

What is the most common grain for bullets? I would be reloading mostly for plinking from a Storm carbine with non-restricted length barrel?

Titegroup for sure. TSE has some of those Caliber specific load manuals, and I believe I saw ones for 40 S&W there yesterday...

You can get 40's commonly in 155, 165, 180 and 200... 180 is the most common...
However I have seen a 135 and I think it was 228 or something like that... but it was long.....

I'll suggest Titegroup as well. Above 4.0gr loads it will burn clean in the 40s&w and will be consistent regardless of the powder location in the case.

On the other hand, if you are looking to impress with great clouds of smoke, this is not the powder for you :D
