Hi all,

Soon I will be moving to Halifax and I was wondering what is the best range to join to practice for this. Basically what I am looking for is a range with a good sized rifle range (basically a military style one, I want around minimum 500m range) and a pistol range (plan on getting my restricted soon). I am very interested in joining these competitions because I enjoy shooting my milsurps and these are the actual ranges these firearms were intended to be used at (I plan on shooting more for fun than to actually win).
Any input is appreciated, thanks.

The club I go to is very good in my opinion but is limited to 300 meters. It has 4 pistol range tough. Most of the clubs around Halifax are 1 hour drive unfortunalty. Where are you moving from?

Your choices are around Halifax are:

The Atlantic Marksmen Association (or AMA).
We have a 300 yard (just short of 300 to tell the truth), rifle range, 6 pistol bays, 1 shotgun shack. We also have the only non government indoor range in the area where we shoot handgun, .22 rifle, and archery year round. We host IPSC shooting, cowboy action shooting, and some 3 gun.
The outdoor range is just past the airport and so is about a half hour drive from Halifax/Dartmouth.

The Nova Scotia Rifle Association
NSRA has the only civilian long range rifle range in the province. I think it goes out to 800m but I'd have to check to be sure.
NSRA hosts F Class and similar rifle shooting plus some PPC pistol shooting at their outdoor facility on the Beaverbank Road, about 30 minutes from Halifax but a lot closer if you're already in Bedford or Sackville.

If you want to look a bit further out you have a few more choices.

Musquodoboit Valley Rifle and Revolver Club has a mix of rifle and pistol bays and hosts different shooting disciplines. They're about 45 minutes from Halifax.
The Annopolis Valley Sports Shooting Association is outside of Kentville so it is about an hour from Halifax.
The Captain Kid Rod and Gun Club has a small indoor range for handguns and they shoot clays over the water. They are about 45 minutes to an hour outside Halifax.

Here's my map of all the ranges I know of in the Maritimes. There are others but I've yet to find them all on Google Maps.

Full Disclosure: I'm on the board of AMA and I run their (our) website.

Welcome to Halifax and best of luck settling in. You'll find the NS CFO has an excellent understanding of the laws and regulations - he actively shoots IPSC. However, you cannot discharge or even have a firearm in your possession in any game natural habitat unless it is hunting season and you are hunting. No casual plinking or target shooting on anything but established ranges. The provincial Dept of Natural Resources does run a system of public access gun ranges across the province - see the map.

I am moving from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The distance to shoot isn't really much of a problem (I used to drive at least a hour out to go shooting at my favourite shooting pit and a bit longer if it was already taken). Thanks for the heads up on the no plinking on crown land, as that's where all my civilian shooting has taken place. Looks like there are some good options in the area, I will have to look into them deeper when I get out there. Thanks
