So my lady likes shooting and what not, and she prefers handguns and shotguns, but I want to get her into rifle shooting. She likes the way my M305 operates, but it is way too big for her so I was thinking of either getting her a Mini-14 which is pretty much the exact same operating system as the M305 so she's familiar with it, or the M1 Carbine which is a pretty close operating system. What is the recoil like on these rifles compared to the 305?

Mini 14 would be a good choice if she does want the action to be very similar. If bolt action was okay I'd recommend the Remington 700 Featherlight, my wife tried it out and loves it because its light and balanced better for her than other rifles in the same weight range (ie. X-bolt, and a Vanguard).. Looking to buy her one in the near future.

The M14 has recoil. ???????

The mini is probably the way to go...

Or

Get her an sks

LoL, I thought that about the m14 as well, but I'm not recoil sensitive so I refrained from saying it. SKS I'd stear clear of unless you don't care about group size and just want to shoot lots of rounds fairly cheaply fast.. Mag changes or reloading is a PITA though....

She doesn't like the SKS... and I'm not recoil sensitive either, hunting geese with a 10 gauge pump barely phases me, but she can handle the .308, she just doesn't like the recoil, i think a .223 would be easier for her to handle.

So your wife likes the 305 ...but it’s too big for her and she doesn’t like the recoil …why change platforms ,,,,,,,,,,,,,I would buy her a m305 Shorty and a wood stock from Boyds then cut it down it fit her reach , and install a Good iron coast guard brake , that will take care of the recoil ……this gives her a rifle she already loves to shoot …and now it’s built just for her

Sorry thats what I meant, was that I didn't notice there being a difference in recoil between mini-14 and m14, but I also didn't feel that the m14 recoils much.. but im not sensative to that, so the mini-14 may recoil less.. and I imagine it does.

A Mini-14 or 30 would probably be a good suit for her, maybe you should take her to a gun store and have her try and hold a few? A properly set up m14 would kick ass but I know with my girlfriend she finds my shorty with a USGI stock too front heavy.

I have heard with the mini-14 they redesigned it over the last year or two and the new ones are a lot more accurate then the older ones?

I gave up shopping for my wife many years ago. I learnt it is best to take her to the shop. she spends a couple of hours trying just about every rifle they have and then whatever they have in pink or looks cute or funny she ends up buying. Otherwise anything I may buy for her when she is not with me at the shop is ugly dark heavey ... and she will never touch.

Sorry cant help you on this one.

My M14 as shown here weighs in at around 8.5 pounds unloaded. I'm having a Remembrance Day sale right now that will get her a scope mount and an op rod spring guide for a good price. High value. High quality. This is a rifle she'll have a hoot with... .

mini 14 .223

Or have you considered a JR Carbine in 9mm or .40. Its a daintly little thing about perfect for women shooters. Even go for it in .45 and punch a bit bigger hole in the target.
