I own a number of firearms but have never bothered with scopes, at all, period.

I am considering putting one on my deer gun (M14, 308 / 7.62x51 Nato) for target practice and perhaps some ranged deer hunting.

I did pick up a cheap $20 used scope that was 3*9 Bushnell I think but this, I am certain, was for a 22. At 75 yards the cross hairs are larger than my bull's eyes. (few inches wide).

Im looking for a scope on a budget that is weather (cold/water/fog/humidity) resistant that also has markings for estimating range drop over distance and preferably an illuminated central dot or cross for those hours of the day that one can see a dear easily with their eyes but black cross hairs may not be so easily seen (The reason I want the scope, sometimes before "dark" as the sun is setting my iron sights do not show up so well).

Something inexpensive, functional, and durable...I dont care about brandnames or how good it looks.

thx in advance,

I have a Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest and have had no issues after about 1000 rounds. The wide field of view is helpful for target acquisition.

3-9 x 40 is plenty. 2.5X to 8X is better. Any more magnification than that is far too much for the cartridge.
"...larger than my bull's eyes..." 75 yards is too close, but the reticle is too big for the target you're using. Red dot sights are like that too. Most of those have a 3 minute dot. That's 3" at 100.

I have Bushnell 3200 10x tactical mounted on my rifle now and like it alot.Before that I had a Bushnell 3200 elite 3-9 , redfield 3-12 , and a Burris 3-9 mounted .
For the money and the best hunting scope the refield was the best deal but it had a 4 plex reticle system and no target turrets so I use it elsewhere now.
Dont get a cheap scope mount .

Arms 18 mount , Arms 22 throw rings

P&D had a great deal on the 10x tactical awhile back and I bought another one...see if they still have a deal on them.

this is my mount

In the past I've spent quite some ( frustrating ) time messing with M14 mounts and scopes and the best combo I came up with was ARMS 18 Mount with Bushnell 10x Tactical. May be a little too much for hunting and so OP may wish to consider a 3-9 variable.

C'mon guys a 10x tactical scope for hunting? Really? Just having the big ass target knobs would be a pain in the butt on my light rifle in the thick stuff. I think if you want a fixed power, half that magnification would be much better suited to the majority of hunting situations.
Of course I guess if it is used mostly for the range and or at fixed ranges like the OP says, maybe...

Gonna say you should check out some of the variables down at the LGS. Scopes are very subjective.

I have a Firefly on one of my .243's and absolutely hate it. The crosshairs are so thick that they almost obstruct your view. I have a few Bushnell 3200's with regular crosshairs and I believe they are a vastly under-rated scope.
