Hi, I am looking for good scope for marlin 1985ss 47/70 rifle.
I need something that can hold the recoil vari 2x7 in range up to $300
what do you recommend?

Don't know what to suggest, we had to send back a customers Leupold VX-111 in 1.5-4.5X or some such as the crosshairs ended up missing after a few shots. Heavy loads do that in the 45/70, that's why i use peep rear and firesight front, don't want to be caught out on a hunt with scope probs. in the heavy kickers!

Not to hijack this thread, but I have a 45/70 guide gun and am looking to put on a VXII 1-4x20 scope. What height of rings are you guys using? Thanks

While not a 45-70, I do have a Leupold FXII 4x33 mounted with low rings on my XLR in 444Marlin. Plenty of room between the bell and the barrel.

My guide gun wears a weaver fixed 2.5 with weaver mounts and low ring, it's a perfect fit for the gun, and can still hit a pop can at 200 yards. For around 200.00 the fixed weavers are very tough, mine has been on many 458's 375's and other hard kickers that would destroy most variables costing three times as much.

I have two guideguns a .444P and a 45-70.
They wear VXII 1-4x20 on the 444P and a Vari-XIII 1.5-5X20 on the 45-70.
Low rings seem to work well. For bush hunting i like the VXII better than the VXIII Just my 2cents. Hope it helps.
